Russelia equisetiformis

This shrub is a popular garden plant, and it is easy to see why. Its bright green stems & tiny leaves are a perfect foil for its bright scarlet tubular flowers, and it flowers prolifically. Because its stems arch outward and weep down, it works very well hanging down a wall. It is not as drought-tolerant as most of the plants at the Ruth Bancroft Garden, so we grow it at the edge of the pool where there is more available moisture. Native to Mexico and Guatemala. This genus was formerly in the family Scrophulariaceae, but new DNA evidence has forced a re-alignment of the plants in this family and the related Plantaginaceae, resulting in a new family placement.
