Wondering where we're headed as a society with all this talk about Russian hacking...

It seems that fear of Communism and the Cold War is taking on new life in a new form. In a 2013 book by Nicolas Lampert, I've been reading about a 1938 Depression Era government funded Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project that was part of the New Deal programs. Although it could have been successful, funding for the program was cut and along with other obstacles artists were forced into self-censorship, for fear of being blacklisted as communists. This and other New Deal programs were attacked by the House of Un-American Activities chaired by Republican Martin Dies. Sadly to deflect all of this, the program administrators offered the services of the art programs to the war effort. Photographer John Vachon has said that his photographs "began to look like those from the Soviet Union". Artists were marginalized and their works were undervalued and much of them were discarded. Here is the gigantic War Bond photo mural by Rothstein that was installed in NYC's Grand Central.

Is it true that history repeats itself? Well, it appears that way! And the reason may be that world leaders continue to use the same tried strategies for power and control that work on a world population that is either largely uneducated or unaware. The 1917 Espionage Act and 1918 Sedition Act were part of the "Red Scare" designed to battle antiwar and anticapitalist activism. Interestingly, the Socialist Eugene V. Debs ran for president from his Atlanta prison cell and earned an unprecedented 3.4% of the votes. His campaign pin had the slogan: For President Convict No. 9653!!
