I don’t understand why I’ve heard people saying that Pence’s depiction in the manga is good, even some calling it better than his original game depiction. When I went to actually read the manga, I was alarmed that I haven’t heard anyone saying the opposite.
Often, his contributions to the story are either made into jokes or removed. Jokes with Pence often feel mean-spirited. The part where the joke is Pence is so bad at looking pretty that Roxas would rather do homework than look at him certainly isn't a kind-hearted joke, I'll tell you that. There's so many jokes where the punchline is "haha, he eats a lot" or "haha, he's foolish". Ignoring the obvious reason why these jokes are happening, those jokes don't even fit him? This description, "He looks a little dull, but he's sharp as a tack." Dull? What about him looks dull??
The only part about his manga depiction where I could understand why people would call it "good" is they lean further into his "nerdy" aspects, but even that is mostly done for laughs, and, I dunno, I don't really jive with everything he does being turned into a joke. It just reads like "you gotta laugh at the fat character. Everything he does is funny because he's fat." (similar gripe with the attempts in the community to make him the "meme god", but that's a conversation for another day)
One of the things I love about Pence in the games (well, disregarding kh3) is he's not made fun of, he can be funny without being the punchline, he's just a person as anyone else and his role in the story isn't relegated to jokes, which is such a breath of fresh air after enduring so many painful and irritating stereotypes... yet the manga gleefully jumps into the pitfall of making him into the "fat comic relief character" trope.
It's really disappointing and unpleasant. I would never call any of this "better". It upsets me a lot, yet I feel weird in pointing it out because I haven't seen anyone else express the same feeling.
