angles of my war water jar before and after being shaken. other bits of my altar are also visible, mostly because moving the jar seemed likely to disturb the iron precipitate in the fashion I wanted to document in the second row of photographs. the war water, once shaken/the precipitate mixed through the solution, settles pretty fast- the below is murky, but hardly opaque, and was taken eighteen minutes after the last of the above:
it’s interesting, though not strictly surprising, how black-rather-than-red the water looks when it’s stirred up; I haven’t opened it since the first day, and oxidation (i.e., in the case of iron, rusting) requires, y’know, oxygen. after all, the drip on the jar is plenty red, because it’s exposed to air.
I kinda like the idea of only opening it when I’m gonna put the war water in/on something, so it can rust on contact (probably requiring a pre-application shake- I don’t imagine the clear solution in the top row is much but salty vinegar)... but I’m not married to the idea, and besides I have plenty of iron to start over if I decide to let this stuff oxidize and then regret it. It may be more sustainable, if my goal is to paint rust onto something, to make iron dust somehow (would an emory board suffice?) and mix small amounts of the dust with water immediately pre-application.
I really should be documenting my streetcombing hauls- I found some cool pieces today, for instance, and I already have... so much neat rusty shit.
