RustRepair-Peaceful Day

(Feeling proud of my first one-shot of RustRepair. Shout out to @bunnyjoyce-blog, whose works got me into this rare pair. Enjoy!)

A light breeze tousled Rusty’s hair a bit as he made his way down the track. Coupled behind him was Wrench, who gave glances at the moving scenery as she held a firm grip on the steam train’s couplings. The black and bronze switcher had the day off, as did the repair truck, which was much-needed in her opinion. Since both of them were off, Rusty purposed that he take Wrench to a spot he himself went to relax after a hard days work if he had time. Of course , she said yes and the two set course for the countryside.

‘Here we are.” Rusty announced as he came to a stop. Their destination was a grassy hill with a small patches of flowers here and there. Wrench uncoupled from Rusty and the two stepped off the track, onto the lush green field. Wrench let out a relaxed sigh as she sat down, happy to be off her wheels. Rusty sat down next to her. He took off his hat and ran a hand through his curly, brown hair. “This place is really nice.” said Wrench. Her eyes scanned the verdant pasture and colorful blossoms. “Very beautiful.” “I’m glad you like it.” Rusty replied “Thought it would be nice to take you somewhere you can relax and be at peace.” Wrench’s red lips formed a soft smile. “I appreciate it.” She closed her brown eyes and tilted her head, basking in the calming atmosphere. “I love my job, but I admit, it takes a lot out of me.” You’re great at it though.” The steam train complemented. “That is true.” The crane car replied with a hint of pride.

Rusty couldn’t help but stare at the repair truck, taking on her features. Her alabaster face, bright red lips, the matching sharp streaks on her cheekbones, light blue eyeshadow completed the look. Rusty’s cheeks turned a light pink. Wrench was never too concerned about how she looked, but Rusty couldn’t help but admire the natural beauty she had about her. “It’s impolite to stare, you know.” The sound of the repair truck’s voice snapped Rusty out of his trance. His blush darkened as he realized he’d been caught staring. “S-sorry! I didn’t mean to stare.” The steam train looked at his lap in embarrassment. Wrench chuckled at the brunette steam train. “Relax Rusty.” she soothed good-naturedly. “I prefer your gaze, anyway.” Rusty rubbed the back of his neck and gave a shy smile.

Another light breeze picked up and Wrench took that moment to take off her crane-like helmet. Her uncovered hair was ginger-red in the style of a pixie cut. The repair truck put her helmet to the side and ran a hand through her short-cropped hair. Rusty couldn’t help but stare again. He had never seen Wrench without her helmet before; he had to admit, her hair was beautiful. The red suited her nicely. As he continued to gaze at the silver crane car, his mouth moved before he realized it. “Wow, You’re really pretty.” A flustered look and pink blush appeared on Wrench’s face. These two things made the black and bronze engine realize that he’d said those words out loud. “I’m sorry! T-that just slipped out! I-I didn’t mean-” “No no! It’s fine, really!” Wrench interrupted, making Rusty go silent. She adopted an uncharacteristically bashful look as she cleared her throat and ran her fingers through her red hair. 

There was a small moment of silence before Wrench spoke again. “You’re...really pretty too, by the way.” She said in a low, soft voice. Rusty’s cheeks and ear tips turned red at the compliment. A bright, wide smile spread acrossed his face as a happy giddy feeling bubbled in his chest. He rubbed the back of his neck again as he let out a bashful, flattered chuckle; which was apparently contagious as Wrench joined in the same manner. After a few moments, the two rolling stock calmed down from their laughing fit. Rusty leaned back to fully lie on the grass, Wrench following suit. The two intertwined their hands as they looked up at the clear, blue sky, enjoying their peaceful day.

W124 crash repair - rust repair and repaint

Before my 300TE could be repainted, the rust uncovered in the rear window apertures had to be repaired.  The rust was cut out and the area welded - we didn't use any specific repair panels in my case.

Once all the rust was repaired, the next step was obviously paint. Since the whole car was not being resprayed, just the rear quarters and roof the colour had to be blended in. The goal wasn't to get my car perfect, but to fix any rust and get it looking really good without the expense of a full respray. While most of the work is in the preparation, it's when the colour goes on that the car is really transformed. Seeing how much better it was looking when I visited made a big difference.

The car looks really sleek without the roof racks and rubbing strips on the roof.  However, I do plan to put it back to the stock look.

The bumper was painted separately and will go on later.  One of the things that attracted me to this car at the time of purchase was the colour - 888 Beryll.  Its a great colour and looks so much better without the badly faded roof.   By 1990 it was getting rarer for a Mercedes-Benz to be sold in an interesting colour. I was also impressed with the red XJC parked under the hoist next to my 300TE.  I'm a big fan of the XJC, and red is a great colour for one.

W124 crash repair - disassembly and rear window rust

With all the parts procured, my 300TE went into the body shop.    The repair started out as routine, removal of the old bumper and disassembly.   However, things quickly went sideways with the removal of the rear windows.

While I was aware of the rust traps in the S124 rear window design, I wasn't prepared for how bad the rust would be would be without any real external evidence.  I'm really glad I did this repair now, as while it was bad, it was still very much repairable.

Both sides were pretty bad with one slightly worse.   The challenge is that if any water gets under the seal, there is nowhere for it to go.   It sits and rusts away the metal under the seal.  The low point seems to be at the front of the aperture, although there was some rusting at the rear.

Fixing the rust was going to be more effort than I had planned, but at l was getting it repaired all at once.  It would have been quite a shame to fix one side only. Preparing the roof for paint was more effort than I had hoped.  The strips on the roof are just attached with adhesive.  But the actual roof racks require the headlining to come down.  Seeing the strips off the roof showed how badly the paint had faded from original, the main reason why I was having the roof repainted.
