Kinda angsty
submitted by @afincf-tirwer
a dumb idea, a kinda sad angsty one about the fact that because Yu Wenzhou’s handspeed and his tactical ability has made it so that he can stay in the professional circuit longer than Huang Shaotian, Huang Shaotian would likely have to retire first, he notices he’s slowing down and he wants to leave on his own terms and not drag out a dying career, it was a promise he made to himself. Yu Wenzhou retires on the same day, or decides to retire with him and they have a massive fight over it.
Huang Shaotian’s face was set in fury, spitting out every word viciously, angrier than Yu Wenzhou had ever seen him in all the years they’d lived and worked together, he’d never seen his partner so furious.
“You’re retiring? Why? You have at least two more years! You don’t have to retire out of pity for me!”
“It’s not pity-”
“Bullshit!” Yu Wenzhou fell silent as Huang Shaotian sucked in a deep breath, trying to hold onto his temper, but knowing he was rarely this angry. “That’s bullshit Wenzhou, you’re retiring because I’m retiring, you don’t want me to have to watch you compete when I can’t.” Yu Wenzhou caught the flicker of bitterness written in his partner’s eyes, watched as Huang Shaotian struggled with the knowledge that he could no longer compete professionally, that this is where his career in Glory ended.
It was a cruel irony in a way, was the next thought that came to Yu Wenzhou’s mind, that the very thing that had everyone doubting his ability to become a pro player, his handspeed, was now what could preserve his career past what other pros could maintain. Glory had been Huang Shaotian’s whole world for most of his life, the Glory Pro Alliance for only a little less time, and now it was time to leave it behind, and it hurt.
“You’re angry,” Huang Shaotian scoffed at the words, his body language clearly conveying, really? and Yu Wenzhou sighed softly, reaching a hand out for Huang Shaotian, hoping the other would let him hold him.
Yu Wenzhou felt a wave of relief when his partner sank into his arms, leant into his embrace and Yu Wenzhou rested his head on his shoulder, words soft, nearly inaudible despite the silence in the room.
“I didn’t choose to retire because of what happened today Shaotian.” His partner still scoffed, disbelieving but Yu Wenzhou didn’t let it deter him, wrapping his arms more securely around Huang Shaotian. “I chose to retire with you three years ago, when we first got together-”
“You said you didn’t play Glory for me! You said that you loved the game- you didn’t- did you-!”
“I don’t play Glory for you Shaotian, I didn’t lie. I love Glory, I love the game,” here Yu Wenzhou paused, unsure if he should continue but he took a deep breathe and continued. “But I love playing Glory with you. I want you as my partner, on and off the stage, no one else.” Yu Wenzhou’s cheeks were flushed slightly red as Huang Shaotian twisted to look him in the eyes, raw affection written plainly across his face. “I want to retire with you- if you’ll let me-”
Yu Wenzhou was cut off by Huang Shaotian pulling him down into a deep kiss, hands tangling in each other’s hair, desperation making them cling to each other. It was salty, tears slipping down their cheeks and they fell onto the bed, still tangled in each other, refusing to let go.
“If you want to retire with me, I won’t stop you. Please though,” Huang Shaotian murmured his words into his partner’s neck, a desperate plea, “please don’t regret it Wenzhou.”
“I would never regret it, you are my partner in Glory, without you…” Yu Wenzhou trailed off, unable to find the words and his reassuring smile soothed the anxiety and bitterness in Huang Shaotian’s chest and they lay there in silence.
The sun was setting outside the window, not that they could see it, not that they were paying attention but it was poetic some would say. That as they came to terms with the fact that they were in the twilight of their careers, that outside their bubble, darkness was bringing the world into its own quiet twilight.
OKAY THIS REALLY GOT AWAY FROM ME I’M SO SORRY
Ohhh I’m just watching the making of ‘The Long Night’ episode of GoT and they’re using the ‘Leaving Earth’ music from ME:3 over the filming of Jorah’s death scene - it’s honestly making me sadder watching this than the actual episode how rude
