As we set the board game down, you took my piece and replaced it with a button. You told me that as a button, I would play by new rules. You told me I could only play with pink money, but you handed me blue. You sent me to jail but I escaped. You said I was cheating. You said buttons couldn’t play in this game anyway. You took my button too. You became enraged as I pouted and wailed, “this isn’t fair!” You told me to just keep playing and I did. I played with nothing. I remembered my spot on the board. I was sure, so sure, that I had won. Until you told me that as a button, I would have to play by new rules. That the first square was my only spot. That as a vacant, impalpable piece.. I was never allowed to move. That the button, the invisible player, was always supposed to lose.
