EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Sean Silverman On This Century’s Legacy
We had the opportunity to interview This Century’s guitarist, Sean Silverman this month. The band recently released their new album, Soul Sucker, and played a handful of farewell shows in California and Arizona. We spoke with Silverman about This Century’s milestones, favorite memories abroad, and the members’ future musical endeavors. Read the interview below and check out photo coverage from This Century’s final San Francisco show here. Many thanks to Sean Silverman and 8123 for their time!
Which song or opportunity (tour, etc.) do you believe jumpstart your career?
Sean Silverman: “To Love and Back” was probably the first song that allowed us to gain the exposure necessary to actually be a touring band. You always dream of traveling the country and performing music but it's quite another thing to see it fully realized and that song allowed us the opportunity to jumpstart that.
What has been your experience on an independent label? Has it allowed you more creativity or different opportunities than you would have on a different label?
SS: The experience has been incredibly unique. It's allowed us the creative freedom to make art in the way that we've always dreamed of. It's also given us the support and nurturing environment necessary to create great things. That's really the recipe for keeping a band together as long as we had been. This still continues to be the case as our journey as part of an artist collective continues.
You have had so many opportunities to go abroad! Are there any highlights?
SS: Manila always stands out in our minds as an experience that we'll never forget just because we were so shocked to see the response in person after only really comprehending it on the internet. Our Europe run with The Maine boys was really special too. Pretty much got to check forty items off of my bucket list after that tour.
If you had to pick, which song would you like fans to remember you by?
SS: I'm particularly fond of “Sound of Fire” simply because it was the first song we ever wrote for the first record that everyone rallied behind. It felt like this central piece to a puzzle that we had been trying to crack for the longest time and once we knew that we had it, everything started to come together.
How can dedicated fans support your future efforts? What’s in store for life after This Century? We noticed you has been part of the Technicolors’ live show and Joel mentioned continuing songwriting.
SS: We're all very much continuing to pursue music in a myriad of ways. Alex and I are continuing to write and produce for other artists, Joel is working on solo stuff and Ryan is continuing his Stop Dead project amongst many other pursuits. Music is part of our existence and there's no way that all of us could stop creating.
To be honest the new This Century's album is so fuCKING AMAZING I'M SO PROUD OF THEM BUT ALSO I'M REALLY SAD 'CAUSE IT'S THEIR LAST ALBUM, I love them so much.
Our new album #SoulSucker comes out in just one week and I honestly have a hard time believing that the moment has finally come. A year and a half in the making. What a crazy period of time in all three of our lives. Difficult, taxing, frustrating...invaluable, alluring, fruitful. This record is such a strange synthesis of emotions plucked from all across the spectrum of the human experience. Life took the three of us on quite the roller coaster ride. This album is the souvenir we've been given after stepping off. One of my favorite things about doing music is reminding you, the "fans", that we're in this together with you; that we deal with the same messy, everyday life stuff that you do (this album should make that very clear haha) and we're here, not as much to teach you some lesson, as we are to just be here and hopefully help you through whatever you're going through. I'm really praying this album will be a blessing to you, whether it's just something nice to listen to or something that resonates with you at a much deeper, personal level. You'll have to let us know what it is to you once it's out next week, we love to hear your stories. Thanks for doing life with us! -Joel You can pre-order the album now at http://81twentythree.com or on iTunes! (Photo by @noemipossible)
