300 words of winter - #4
Characters: Louie/Ryan
Prompt: Cutting their own Christmas tree
---
“I don’t think I should be trusted with this,” Ryan says, holding out the saw to Louie with two fingers.
Louie takes it and Ryan feels better now, but Louie also doesn’t look like he knows what to do with a saw, so maybe he shouldn’t be trusted with it either.
Ryan isn’t sure how the two of them are allowed to just check out a saw like they’re at the toolbox library and cut down a tree. They did just walk past a family with two kids who were fighting about who got to hold the saw, so maybe Ryan is overthinking this.
But. They both need all their fingers.
“How are we supposed to pick one?” Ryan whispers, the question going up in a cloud.
“We’ve done this before,” Louie says, nudging him down one of the rows of firs. “We can do it again.”
He’s right, they’ve done this before, but they didn’t cut it down themselves. “Yeah, but what if I pick one, get in there with the saw, and then see one I like better?”
“You have to commit,” Louie says, like this is the easiest thing in the world.
“Okay,” Ryan says and zeros in on a nicely grown tree, not too big, a little bushy at the bottom. He gently pats one of the branches. “How about this one?”
“I like it,” Louie says and holds up the saw.
“Wait.” Ryan stares down the row of firs. “We should look at more, right?” He points at another tree a little further down. “I think that one might be better.”
Louie, with the smallest of smiles on his face, follows him to the next tree. And the next. And another one. Who would have thought that there are so many pretty trees out there? Ryan can see them all in their living room.
“Can we get two?” Ryan asks.

Wow! What a great example of an actor's own backstory making it's way into the show's canon - and in a way that's authentic, well-written, and respectful!
