Who’s who in total novajo? Like I’m guessing Mitch is on guitar but is it him singing aswell? And Ryan is part of it too?
anon this is an excellent question - i do wish this band weren’t so shrouded in mystery. here are some data points! hope you’re down for a deep dive!
2013: a review names mitch as the guitarist, jon giacalone as the bassist, and jason winner as the drummer. the attached photo makes it clear that mitch is also the lead vocalist. apparently “his ozzy-inspired bark could use some more melodic awareness.”
october 2014: the blurb from total navajo’s eyelids ep states “Total Navajo is the brainchild of Mitchell Rowland and Ryan Nasci, two friends that met in Cincinnati Ohio and are now residing in Los Angeles CA.” this would indicate that ryan (who would later become harry’s sound engineer) was part of the band at its inception, and yet he’s not mentioned at all in that 2013 article!
november 2014: this blurb names mitch as the drummer, guitarist, and vocalist. ryan was just chilling i guess. jk he probably played bass
ALSO november 2014: look at this picture. the dude on the left is ryan but the middle guy is definitely NOT jon giacalone, and this reviewer (who’s apparently a stan) doesn’t seem to know who he is either. after a good amount of research i determined he’s probably tyler scott, the assistant engineer on eyelids. i think he played drums
2015: mitch’s brother kyle sat in on drums a few times. here he is doing that, with ryan on bass. simple!
In a question from earlier today about why Mitch figured more prominently than the other musicians in bta you said "I think he was featured so heavily because he was (and is) such an important person in Harry’s creative development." From your answer I understood that you thought Mitch was the most important person in Harry's creative development so he got screen time in bta. Did I misunderstand you answer? Your latest answer seems to give equal credit to all of the musicians with H in Jamaica.
I never said he was ‘the most important’…it’s not black & white! The whole songwriting/production team were obviously really important to Harry as a collective. I’m sure they each contributed in different ways. Harry has spoken about the way Jeff B pushed him and urged him to improve and picked out little gems from mediocre songs. And I’m sure his sheer musical talent was incredibly inspiring. Harry spoke about how Mitch and he were ‘the new guys’ and it seemed they collaborated very closely on the songwriting and obviously personally they totally clicked. And maybe for Harry it was important to have that lead guitarist songwriting partner just like all the greats did. I’m sure Tyler, Alex and Ryan contributed in yet different ways - Alex and Tyler are producers and musicians, Ryan’s the engineer and bassist, and Jeff B spoke about how effortlessly Ryan captured the sound they wanted because he was so used to recording himself and Mitch….
….what I’m trying to say is, this isn’t an either/or situation. I don’t see the value in assessing who was the most important person in the room. From what Jeff B and Harry have said, Mitch seemed like a bit of a catalyst for Harry’s songwriting and recording process, whereas perhaps the others were more like teachers, facilitators, mentors, guides…I dunno.
Anon 2: Mitch and Alex have obviously had the most carry through and impact on Harry so far because they were part of the writing/engineering of the album and are now part of his band and Alex is music director. I think it’s pretty clear he has a good bond with all of the band now that they’ve been practicing and performing together for a bit. I think what Jeff Bhasker said in the HDD interview about how their performances will only get looser and more natural by the time they get to tour is so true.
I dunno about them having the most impact…it’s also about who was available and willing to go on tour with Harry Styles for a year, y’know? Jeff Bhasker wasn’t gonna do that! Tyler Johnson was unlikely to do that! Perhaps Ryan, but my guess is he’d rather be a producer….It’s kinda cool that Alex Salibian gave up a production gig under Jeff Bhasker to go on tour with Harry, I’d love to know more about that!!
Anon 3: I think Harry has said why he really became close to Mitch, he obviously really admired all the musicians and writers he worked with but Harry felt a bit like the new guy in a group of more seasoned writers and musicians and Mitch being new to that experience also made it feel even more like a shared experience. It also seems like Mitch is very reserved and Harry sort of makes an effort to pull him out of his shell. That seems like a very Harry thing to do to make sure people are comfortable
Yeah, he’s talked about what bonded him and Mitch a lot. And it was nice what Jeff B said about Mitch being a super sweet, gentle guy. I think a sweetheart who’s a monster on guitar sounds like Harry’s perfect bud (….or as close to the perfect bud as possible without being a dad). Watch Harry try to get Mitch’s parents to adopt him….
