Starstruck

My apologies for once again failing to post daily on this blog; it’s been an epic roller coaster of a week. First, Turner and I finally got around to posting Machine Gun Bunnies on YouTube, and just for kicks, I decided to tweet at it at YouTube celebrity/Film Riot Host Ryan Connolly. Wouldn't you know, a few hours later, he actually tweeted back and liked it! He’s a major creative role model to many people in our class, so this was kind of a big deal. Like the cursed souls of the Underworld stopping to listen to the lyre of Orpheus, we all left our computers to crowd around my phone and hysterically geek out. But that was nothing compared to the meeting that was in store for me that weekend. 

Coming off the exhaustion of my longest week yet, I had tickets to a meet & greet with the one and only J.K. Simmons. As a Whiplash-obsessed film student who originated as a Spider-man obsessed kid, it’s safe to say I was extremely excited. Add that to the recently discovered knowledge that he was in the same fraternity I’m in when he was in college, and I was practically losing my mind. If there’s one thing I learned from meeting him, it’s that I’m not the man I thought I was, because the second he looked me in the eye I went into total panic mode. All the greetings and questions and I’d had rehearsed vanished, and all I remember is awkwardly asking if he could sign both my copy of Whiplash and my Phi Mu Alpha songbook while repeating “it’s an honor to meet you” an uncountable amount of times. At some point during this surreal blur of an encounter, he was putting his arm around me so we could take a picture, and the cherry on top was that when I left my marker on the table, he came out from behind the table to give it back to me as I was walking away. Silly as it may sound, that image of J.K. Simmons reaching out to hand me back my marker is something I shan’t soon forget. He remembered my name, too!!

So obviously, that story had a bit of my exaggeration and flair. But know I’m speaking with the utmost sincerity when I say that J.K. was an incredibly nice, amiable man and I’m still reeling over having been lucky enough to meet him. If our paths ever cross again, I hope I can actually formulate words well enough to thank him for how inspirational he’s been to me. He is truly, without a doubt, one of the greats.
