2 Simple Exercises Recommended by a Ryggspecialist to Strengthen Your Back
Pain in any form and at any location, should be properly investigated. If you are suffering from lower back pain you should investigate to confirm that it is not a symptom of a specific ailment or serious disorder. Lower back pain is a common cause of disability in Sweden. Even though lower back pain and neck pain are common ailments they generally do not signify a serious illness (Back Pain, NECK PAIN - AN EVIDENCE BASED REVIEW, n.d.). More often than not rygg pain is generally a result of sitting for long periods of time and maintaining bad posture. It is an ailment that most of us suffer from at some point in our lives. If the pain is persistent and is interfering with daily tasks then a ryggspecialist should be consulted. There are a number of exercises that can be done to strengthen the back and prevent pain. Some of these exercises are mentioned below:
McKenzie Exercises
Developed by a New Zealand based physical therapist, Robin McKenzie, these exercises are named after him. McKenzie found that extending the spine with the help of back exercises can help reduce the pain felt due to a compressed disc (Kymberly Fergusson, MCKENZIE EXERCISES TO REDUCE BACK PAIN, 2016).
Press Ups
Press ups are an extension exercises that stretches the spine. Similar to the cobra position in yoga this exercise can help relive back pain and strengthen the spine. Place a soft mat or rug on the floor and lay on it with your stomach down. Place your hands to on your sides and turn your head to one side. Raise your torso off the ground using your hands. Your forearms should be on the floor in front of you and your elbows should be under your shoulder. Hold this position for 30 seconds to a minute. Be careful with this exercise if you are just beginning or are suffering from severe back pain.
Leg Press
This exercise stretches your back muscles in the opposite direction. Instead of laying on your stomach, lie down on your back. Place your leg on an exercise ball so that your knees are bent 90 degrees. You can also substitute the ball with a chair or an ottoman. Bring one of your knees towards your chest. Push yourself but remember not to over exert. Hold the position for about 30 seconds and then switch legs.
If your pain is chronic and is have a negative impact on your lifestyle you need to visit a ryggklinik and see a specialist. One such clinic in Sweden is Rygginstitutet. More information is available on their website.
