It was just a hole in the wall gas station, a small stop off to refill the truck and grab some extra snacks for the road. He had just screwed the gas cap back on when he glanced up and saw Lex at the counter inside, arms full of snacks and supplies, waiting to check out. 

He had never had much of a home before but now, looking at Lex? He knew he had found exactly where he was meant to be. Lex was his home, no matter where they went.

“No, sir. I understand. Yes, sir, I’ll be there. Two days, three at most. Yes, sir.” He set the phone back down on the cradle, stiff and clearly not in the best frame of mind. 

Checking in always sucked but it was worse when he was told he needed to come home for any span of time. It meant someone was paying the family for something and that was seldom a good thing. 

Even worse was knowing it was putting Lex into proximity with danger on top of everything else. Something he would need to take extra precautions with. 

“I have some shit news,” he sighed, dragging himself back to the present and settling his focus on Lex. “I gotta go home for a few days.”

The greeting immediately brought a smile to Lex's face, even though he had tried to be as quiet as possible with how late it was and Lex figuring Ry would be asleep already.

"Yeah?" he asked with a playfully teasing tone as he dropped his stuff by the dresser and crossed the room, not bothering to undress yet when all he wanted was to give his boyfriend some overdue attention after being in the Fae realm for a couple of weeks. "Missed you too. Sorry I couldn't get back sooner."

"Yeah. You know I always miss you when you're not here with me," he pouted as he sat up to wrap his arms around Lex and pull him close. It didn't matter to him how many times they went through this, he would always ache around the edges when Lex wasn't with him.

"Think I about annoyed your entire family while you were gone," he confessed with a laugh, knowing he had been unbearable with his pacing and nerves.

“You make a new one. A home, I mean,” Lex answered candidly, understanding better than most what exactly Ryland had meant by his statement, as well as having his own personal experiences with growing up in a literal hellhole that left its own scars on him.

“One where none of that shit matters and nobody from your past can get to you anymore. It ain’t an easy thing to do, but if you wanna stay alive and are willing to fight for it, it sure as shit beats the alternative.”

"Dunno if I even know how to do that.” He had never had one, not really. A lifetime of abuse and bloodshed had left him with no concept of it. Years spent living out of a truck and avoiding where he grew up as much as he was able to made it hard to even think about putting roots down anywhere.

“How do you manage?”
