DANCING WITH THE STARS STEPHEN NEDOROSCIK & RYLEE ARNOLD performing a freestyle to Viva La Vida by Coldplay 33.10, “Finale”
I am OBSESSED with the way Rylee dances like she’s so energetic!!
DEFINITELY THEIR BEST DANCE TO DATE!!!
I LOVED THAT SO MUCH!!!
Scott was way more comfortable doing that dance then any of the others.
That was a great routine on Rylees end!
They channeled Ryan and Sharpay sooooo well.
And yes I did sing along the whole time.
I may be still rooting for Scott or Robert but Andy’s dance with his daughter was so cute!!! Can’t wait to see Robert’s dedication to his mother
DWTS S34 Week 4: Disney Night!
I always enjoy this night, even though sometimes over the years some songs get overplayed. It does however sometimes mask people's skills or lack thereof behind elaborate costumes, sets, and characters.
The troupe Tron number in the middle was pretty cool.
A lot of the creativity from the pros this week, while I appreciated it in isolation, didn't quite hit due to other factors.
Dylan and Daniella K - Quickstep - 7,8,8 = 23 Okay! I think the standard dances are really allowing Dylan to show growth. It also helps his stiffer upper body because he is maintaining his frame and holding it well for someone his height. I saw a few timing issues and he is still a bit flat footed but that was pretty good footwork. His main mistake was that when Daniella K is sliding he didn't quite get his hand passes right and also didn't handle that well. Daniella K could have taken those out if he was struggling. I'm really mad that people keep saying that Dylan does nothing while Daniella K dances around him for both last week and this week. That's what male parts in ballroom are. Even more so in standard where there aren't many flowery steps for the men. I am a bit surprised he got two 8s but I'm not complaining.
Danielle F and Pasha - Quickstep - 7,7,7 = 21 Another great quickstep. This had so much energy and I love the little characters they were playing so much. Daniella F held her frame very consistently, a big improvement from week 1. Footwork was also very good but there was a kicking bit at the end that they fluffled. I'm surprised this didn't get an 8 from anyone. Were they penalised for breaking hold?
Scott and Rylee - Salsa - 7,7,7 = 21 Now this is more like it from Scott. I felt the start was strong and he used his whole body. He projected energy and I saw some good attempts at hip movement and decent footwork. I do think he is buoyed a bit by the 'Ryan' character though, and would really like to see a dance where he is delivering this kind of energy but just as himself (and doing so throughout the dance, in the actual ballroom content parts, not just that non-tango dance break in the tango). Then during the chorus, he seemed to lose his arms. I saw him very consciously correcting it, but it did seem to make him a bit stiffer from that point on. The ending was also messy. I don't think he missed any arm passes, just that it wasn't as smooth as they probably planned for.
Alix and Val - Viennese Waltz - 8,8,8 = 24 Great choreography from Val. Didn't lose much content to the character or story. Alix killed it and looked really good and smooth. A few moments that in another week would have been too sharp for VW, and also points where her back was arched too much, but these were all very few, so it didn't overtake the dance which was still, at its core, a good VW. When Val spun her on the floor and she rolled and got back up - very smooth transition.
Hilaria and Gleb - Quickstep - 8,7,8 = 23 Oh Gleb. I thought you were doing so well with choreography this season. But that was mostly all the flourish and charleston breaks without as much of the runs and basic steps. I also thought Hilaria's posture was quite upright in hold - they are generally quite lax about this but for her experience, she should be having the lean. The dance was very clean until Hilaria seemed to fumble her split leap. It seemed like she went for a bicycle leap when Gleb went for the split. I don't really recognise the costume or set as particularly Star Wars-y and I don't know if Hilaria even connected to the Star Wars theme at all. Has she even watched Star Wars?
Andy and Emma - Viennese Waltz - 6,6,6 = 18 Very cute dance. Andy was in and out of timing a lot - his footwork when they got down to the floor was messy. He never went very off time or seemed to miss any steps, but sometimes looked like he was running to catch up. Then they did the italian hand dumpling gesture. Guys. Ratatouille is set in France.
Robert and Witney C - Cha cha - 7,7,8 = 22 Okay so when Jodie Sweetin and Keo Motsepe also did Cha Cha to this song years ago, the song was sped up oh so slightly to be right within the cha cha wheelhouse, and a slightly stronger beat was put in to make the song more energetic, both of which really helped it feel more "cha cha". Robert and Witney C used the original, which is slower than regulation tempo. I feel like that took away a lot of energy from this dance. Witney C created some unconventional transitions and lines for cha cha which I quite like. Robert hit all his moves but seemed a bit stiff in his upper body and had a few moments where his weight placement looked a little off. Also, because the song was slower, it made some of their moves look slow or lack sharpness. There also wasn't any wow or eye-catching moments. A weird one, and I really think just adjusting the music a little would have solved it.
Elaine and Alan - Quickstep - 8,8,8 = 24 Hmmmmmm I dunno how to feel about this one. Everything looked...fine...but it didn't really wow me. I think maybe the lighting together with the costumes made everything look flat and both Elaine and Alan are completely blending into the background together. Surprised to see all 8s compared to the other quicksteps tonight. Apparently Alan is now building a rep for kooky makeup and costumes and wearing a full Donkey head piece some years back, and he was in full face paint today as an alien.
Mark and Whitney L - Foxtrot(?) - 9,8,8 = 25 Okay. We have the opportunity for a Hamilton Foxtrot and no one thought of "You'll Be Back/I Know Him"? This dance was announced as a foxtrot and I did see some foxtrot moments, but it really should have been labelled jazz. Whitney L is such a great performer and hit everything super clean. But it was really a stage performance with some foxtrot elements. I feel like Mark chose this song - he posted on socials about editing it - and if this was his vision he could have gone to the producers to ask to change the style to jazz. I love the performance, execution, and choreography. But it is not the style you're announcing! As a dance - 9 was deserved. As a foxtrot - not enough content to be scored.
Jordan and Ezra - Quickstep - 8,8,8 = 24 I liked the way Ezra used the steps. Jordan had very good frame in hold last week, but that wasn't present here. Her left arm dropped a lot, and she/Ezra corrected it later in the dance. I think her footwork was mostly good but her costume was hindering some of her movements. I suppose they are trying to follow the show but that skirt shape isn't doing her dance favours.
Jen and Jan - Jazz - 7,8,8 = 23 Could they really not have given Jen another dance style in week 2, because this song is perfect for QS. This dance was also very weird for me. They would do something that seemed to be building energy and I would be like "okay cool", then the next move would just completely underwhelm. The energy level was not consistent. A bit of a dud to close the show, unfortunately.
We had a lot of Quicksteps tonight making for lots of comparisons and I think the last 2 to go up were slightly overscored while Danielle F, who went in the death spot, was underscored. Have we ever had a night with so many of one dance style? Barring the earliest seasons where everyone was split between 2 dance styles every week.
