Magi: "The odd couple" JuAli and AliHaku's "Love/Hate relationship"

Y'all can we talk about how the Magi: EN fan-TL translates the Magi magazine version's official chapter tag lines on the side for JuAli as "The odd couple Judar and Alibaba are travelling together" and AliHaku as "They have overcome their love/hate relationship"

But for real I keep thinking about the Magi: Ch. 275 - JuAli chapter in Magi's EN fan-TL that has a tag line like "The odd couple Judar and Alibaba are travelling together in a mysterious world!"

And Magi: Ch. 313 - AliHaku chapter after they meet again after the Kou Empire arc fight after 2 years which has the tag line "They have overcome their love/hate relationship and are friends once more!"

I REMEMBER WHEN I FIRST READ THIS FOR THE FIRST TIME, I WAS LIKE... "Odd couple huh. Ok lmao."

And Lumen was like "JuAli so real"

It's so funny like I know they mean "odd couple" as in like "strange duo" but I'll certainly run with that, thanks ✌️ They're lovers, baby!!! Always knew it but they're SO real!!!

Downside is that the fan-TL pages were scanned directly from the magazine version at the time of Magi's release so they're not as clear (the Viz official EN TL scans are ripping directly from the OG digital versions of the tankobon volumes) but I love the EN fan-TL's prose.

As someone bilingual, Viz's way of translating dialogue makes individual characters' speech styles sound so samey to me at times (though the English is clearer and more natural sounding in official TLs, so it's also interesting for me to see Viz's Magi EN TL and I appreciate that it exists). I'm very interested in seeing how Magi was originally translated <3

who wakes the other one up with kisses Alibaba >w< He’s definitely the one who’s straightforward and open with his affection. Hakuryuu puts up an annoyed front, but he secretly really likes the attention and being spoiled.

who cooks for who Hakuryuu cooks because between the two of them, he’s got all the skill for it. But sometimes, if Hakuryuu’s too tired or in too much of a foul mood to cook without compromising the food (read: poison it), Alibaba makes really simple things like hot soup or mac&cheese to share with him and cheer him up. Then they cuddle on the couch and watch TV while they eat.

who is the morning person/night person Wow, Alibaba’s not a morning person at all. Hakuryuu just leaves him in the bed while he showers, brushes his teeth, dresses, etc. Once he’s ready to go, he’ll come back to the bed and kick Alibaba or pull off the covers, tell him he’s going to be late and kiss him once before leaving. When Alibaba eventually zombie-stumbles into the kitchen though, he’ll find a nice, hot breakfast waiting for him (complete with nagging, insulting sticky notes ). ;D

who is the romantic one Alibaba! Most of the time, it’s unconsciously though! He doesn’t even know he’s doing it, but Hakuryuu is VERY aware of it and always quite embarrassed, especially in public. Headcanon that Hakuryuu remains rather tsundere and shy about PDA until they’re well into their relationship. While Alibaba’s more open about his feelings, Hakuryuu’s romantic side only surfaces easily when they’re in private.

who is the top when it comes to sex Depends on how relaxed Hakuryuu is, actually. If he’s wound up and stressed about something, he’ll let it all out in an explosion of feeling and end up shoving Alibaba into the wall or on the bed. But if he’s feeling very safe and comfortable and/or Alibaba has succeeded at calming him down, then Alibaba will lead.

who would lead in ballroom dancing They’re super interchangeable, actually! They’re both very coordinated, light on their feet, physically well-matched and they can read each other’s intentions with ease. Their dancing would be fluid and dynamic, like two martial artists, but also just a bit competitive. X3

who is the more cuddly one Alibaba, although sometimes he’s just so fail/awkward about it that he kills the mood and Hakuryuu just rolls his eyes and brushes him off. XD

who is the one to most likely pick the movie they watch Alibaba, because he’s, well, the one who works hard and plays hard, while Hakuryuu just works hard. Alibaba would be the one who’s more in tune with pop culture and such.

who is the one who would pay for dates I think it would start out pretty even, but then Alibaba might start mooching off Hakuryuu just ‘cause he knows he can get away with it for a few times. And then Hakuryuu will start putting his foot down, especially if Alibaba has been fiscally irresponsible and splurged on new games, etc. Hakuryuu will make sure Alibaba pulls his own weight. >D

who is the one who would initiate a quicky during classes Hakuryuu takes classes rather seriously and he wouldn’t like to be distracted; in fact, he’d probably kill Alibaba for even daring to try something as relatively innocuous as footsie.

Guys, the first dance is perfect for Alibaba and Hakuryuu. I can't stop seeing them dance this! And that kiss when Hakuryuu finally realizes how he needs Alibaba. ;__________;
