You and Nancy had been friends since forever, but you had also had a crush on Steve since as long as you could remember.
And it became a problem when Nancy and Steve started dating, your heart ached as you watched him twirl her around before kissing her, wishing that was you instead.
You never told Nancy how you felt about Steve, so you couldn’t blame her.
Right now, you were at a party at some random’s house. You had went Nancy but she had long disappeared into the crowd after seeing Steve.
So, instead you ended up hanging out with Carol in the kitchen, taking shots every time a guy tried to flirt with the two of you.
You and Carol was an unexpected friendship to say the least, you were used to hanging out with people like Barba and Nancy.
But ever since Nancy and Steve announced their relationship, Nancy had begun to slowly drift away from you, and after Barbara’s disappearance, you were practically alone.
Though you were sad, you didn't want to let the change drown you, so you decided to fill in her spot with someone else.
On the upside, Carol was nice to you and defended you whenever guys tried to mess with you. So it was a win either way.
“Oh my god! That guy was like— totally into you!” Carol giggled, laughing at a guy who had completely turned red after you turned his way.
“I don’t know why guys even come up to us, I mean look at me.” You said, taking a shot, feeling the slight burn go down your throat.
“Yeah, look at you, you’re a complete catch!” Carol said, grabbing some ‘punch’ that was clearly spiked with some sort of alchohol.
“Whatever you say.” You said, rolling your eyes, checking your phone to see what time it was.
1:37am, God.
Your parents were going to kill you.
“Dude, I have to go.” You said, looking at Carol, who, in return, gave you a pouty lip.
“Noo, are you serious?? Can’t you stay a little longer? Who am I supposed to hangout with??”
“I can’t, i’m already going to be big trouble. Why don’t you hangout with Steve or Tommy??” You suggested, smiling at her slightly as you tried to make her feel better.
“Well Steve is too busy sucking face with Nancy, and Tommy is off flirting with some girl to try to get back at me since apparently I ‘flirted’ with a guy in my class.” Carol said, rolling her eyes and putting up air quotes as she spoke.
“Okay, well I gotta go.” You chuckled, hugging Carol bye and going to find Nancy to tell her you were leaving.
You knew she was off with Steve somewhere, so once you located Steve it wasn’t hard to find Nancy.
She was dancing with Steve, even though the sight left a pang in your heart, you pushed it to the side.
“Hey, Nance.” You said, rubbing your arm as you stood awkwardly beside her, the smell of alcohol hitting your nose as people danced around you.
“Hey! Are you leaving?” She asked, turning to you as she put her hand on Steve’s chest, his arm around her as he gazed at her lovingly.
You wanted to throw up.
“Yeah. Parent’s are going to kill me.” You said, the alcohol you chugged down with Carol hadn’t hit you yet, but you knew you should probably get hone before it did.
“I’ll drive you home.” Steve said, “Me and Nance were thinking about leaving too.”
When the three of you got in the car, Nancy took the passenger, which didn’t surprise you.
I mean, she was his girlfriend after all.
You sat in the back, the alcohol finally entering your system as you stare out the window, muffling out the couples conversation
After Nancy got dropped off first, you took her spot in the front seat.
“You okay?” Steve asked, breaking the silence as he turned out of the Wheeler’s driveway.
“Yeah— I just.. I’m tried okay?” You said, turning away to look out the window.
Steve stopped the car and put it in park.
“Listen, we’ve been friends for too long to not notice when somethings wrong.” Steve said, gently putting his hand on your knee.
You knew he only meant it as a comforting gesture, nothing more.
And that thought managed to make your heart ache even more.
“I’m fine. I just want to go home.” You muttered, praying to yourself that he would just drop this and take you home instead of sitting outside Nancy’s house, forcing you to talk to him.
“Why can’t you just trust me with your feelings?” He asked, clearly hurt that you won’t open up to him. “You know that i’ll always be here for you, right?”
“I do trust you.” You muttered, before continuing “it’s just, you won’t like what I have to say.”
Steve’s eyebrows furrowed as he turned to you, his face full of confusion.
“Are you moving schools or somethin’?” Steve asked, figuring it was something stupid like that.
“No— Steve! I’m— inlove with you, okay?” You blurted out, not bothering to look at Steve. “Are you happy now?” You scoffed.
Steve didn’t say anything, just put the car in neutral and started driving towards your house.
A large knot appeared in your stomach.
Why hadn’t he said anything??
If he liked you back he would say it, right??
After a little while of driving, Steve parked outside your house, keeping his eyes on the wheel.
You quickly unbuckled and exited Steve’s car, practically dashing to your front porch as you tried not to let the tears you had been desperately holding in be let out.
You entered your home, quietly closing the door behind you as you silently rushed up to your room, collapsing on the bed.
As you began to let the tears fall, you picked up your phone from your bedside table and put in Carol’s number, crossing your fingers that she would be home.
Carol’s drunken voice peaked through the phone.
“Hello?”
“Hey, Care, it’s me.” You choked out, wiping tears from your eyes.
“Oh my gosh— girl what happened?” Carol asked, her voice immediately filling with concern as she heard your shaky voice.
“I fucked up. I fucked up really bad.” You whined. “I confessed to Steve.”
“Shit, even though he’s dating that Nancy girl? What did he say?” Carol questioned, already assuming it didn’t go well.
“That’s the thing, he didn’t say anything.”
“I’m sorry girl, i can come over with some drinks and we can drink away our sorrows together if you want.”
“I think i’ve had enough drinks for a year.” You said, smiling through your tears.
“Well, in my opinion. Steve and Nancy aren’t going to last.” Carol said before continuing,
“I’ve been telling Steve that it’s weird how her and— What’s that guys name again— Johnathan?? Anyway! They’ve been hanging out alot recently and it’s like super weird.”
“Do you think she likes him?” You asked, you hadn’t been around Nance in a while so you didn’t even know that she had started hanging out with Johnathan.
“Maybe—, oh shit! I gotta go, dad’s awake, see you tomorrow!” Carol whispered, her voice rushed before you heard the phone click, and then she was gone.
You placed the receiver back on the nightstand before you ended up passing out from exhaustion and the alcohol you had drank with Carol.
After a few hours of peaceful sleeping, your alarm ended up waking you up.
You looked over at your clock.
6:45am.
Gosh, your head hurt. Why did you have to drink so much on a school night??
You got up and pulled on some clothes, a baggy hoodie and some shorts.
You really didn’t want to go to school today but you begrudgingly went anyway. You walked downstairs into the kitchen and slipped out the door, hoping to avoid having to tell your parents where you were last night for at least a few more hours.
When you got to school, it seemed like everyone was gossiping about something.
As you walked down the halls, you spotted Carol and quickly speed walked over to her, wrapping her in a hug.
Carol hugged you back before quickly pulling away, “Girl. Did you hear what happened between Nancy and Steve??”
Your face contorted into confusion. What was she talking about? You shook your head
“Apparently Steve caught Nancy and Johnathan kissing so he broke up with her, and now he’s been like super quiet. Me and Tommy tried to cheer him up but to no avail.”
“Aw, that sucks.” You said, worrying about how Steve felt. You wanted to go talk to him but you were worried you already ruined your guy’s friendship past repair.
“Well, I have to go find Tommy, apparently he wants me to skip class with him so we can go out on a ‘date’ but i’m sure he hasn’t planned anything.” Carol said, chuckling as she hugged you.
“Okay. Bye, Care.” You said, watching as Carol walked off before you continued your way to your locker.
As you opened your locker, you noticed a small note fall from your locker. You bent down and picked it up, unfolding it as you stood back up.
“Meet me in the bathrooms, ASAP. - Steve.”
What could he want??
You practically slammed your locker shut as you walked to the bathrooms, worried about why Steve wanted to see you so badly.
When you walked into the bathroom, you saw Steve leaning against the wall.
Once he saw you, he immediately stood up and ran his fingers through his hair.
“Hey, um- we need to talk.”
“Yeah, we do.” You replied.
Steve took a second to speak, his lips parting but nothing came out.
But that’s when he suddenly pulled you close, his lips clashing with yours, you didn’t pull away. You wanted to though.
It was wrong.
It was wrong to be kissing your childhood bestfriend’s ex, even if she had cheated on him and stopped being your friend.
But the way his hands felt against your hips and his lips felt against yours was too good to stop.
But then, Steve pulled away.
“Shit— I am so sorry.” He said, letting out a breath of air.
“I feel terrible about how I acted when you told me you liked me. I was just scared because I felt the same way but I was dating Nance and I didn’t want to cheat— But then I found out she cheated on me and I realized, I really—“
You cut him off with a kiss, smiling against his lips as your fingers interlocked in the back of his hair.
The moment was sweet, two lovers realizing their love for each other.
Until Nancy walked into the bathroom.
