The Birth of S.o.D
My first novel is the fruit of the stories that I first began writing at the age of seven. "Secrets of Dragonia: Dawn of Monochrome" was, at first, handwritten, with pages dominated by colourful drawings. Back then, my story was a much simpler, more childlike rendition of what was to become a grisly, action-packed Young Adult Fantasy. During nine long years of trials and tribulations, the story and characters developed, influenced by the real events and people in my life. I continued to add to the story almost daily, regardless of whether or not I actually had the time to do so; but the writing process certainly took off when I gained regular access to Word Processor.
Once it had proudly culminated into a three-hundred plus page epic, I re-drafted the book countless times. I found that I was repeatedly unsatisfied with my work as my skills had developed substantially along the way, and were disproportionate by the time I could complete a full rewrite. This bothersome process continued throughout the final year of the book's editing period. Friends, family and teachers were made to literally peel me away from my work, with my signing of a contract promising to finally finish the book, cease editing and surrender to my perfectionism, as it were, by submitting the manuscript to a publisher.
I went along the self-publishing route to ensure my constant creative control. The book was published at a local charity called "For The Right Reasons," who help recovering drug and alcohol addicts by providing them with meaningful work in their print shop. The book's cover was designed on photoshop by Stewart Forbes, based on my drawings. I had an extremely beneficial amount of creative control, being granted the opportunity to bind and cut my own books and make last-minute corrections to the manuscript. I have since begun volunteering at this charity, and have gained skills in bookmaking and graphic design, while also working alongside a group of amazing friends who are now like family to me. Through "F.T.R.R," I have been able to help struggling individuals as well as fellow authors in designing book covers.
"Secrets of Dragonia: Dawn of Monochrome" was officially launched at my high school, Fortrose Academy. In 2018, the year of publication, I sold over 100 books with the help of friends and family. The book is available in my local Waterstones as well as on Amazon.
I’m currently working on an audiobook, having hired multiple actors, both up-and-coming and professional. I also hope to one day create a fully-illustrated edition of the novel, uniting my passions of writing and traditional art. I’m also currently working alongside some famous actors and writers to create a podcast drama series focusing on contemporary issues. I’ve had the opportunity to write an episode for this series, thanks to my acquaintanceship with one of the creators. My script is titled "The Colour of Paint" and is a 30-minute story focusing the spiralling life of a young artist who becomes addicted to heroin. The episode is inspired and dedicated to my close friend from “For The Right Reasons,” who has been clean of the drug for 8 years.
I have long dreamed of a career in writing, and Secrets of Dragonia was a glorious kickoff. I am optimistic that my future work will be equally gratifying, and I eagerly anticipate those projects.
