Ezra was en route to his cabin when Kanan stopped him in the passageway. “Did you get your friend squared away?”

“Yeah.”

“Good.” He paused, tilted his head. “How about you?”

“I’m fine. I’ll be a lot better once I get outta these clothes.” Ezra smirked and plucked at his uniform.

Kanan mirrored his expression. “You look good in them, ironically.” He reached out and brushed his hand over the breast of the jacket. “And look at this, not a single crumb or stain! When did you learn to eat like a civilized person?”

“At the Academy,” Ezra said seriously. “They punish you if you get your uniform dirty.”

Suddenly Kanan’s eyes took on a keen glint, and all amusement vanished. “Did they hurt you?” His voice was low and tense, like a durasteel wire pulled taut.

After a pause, Ezra shook his head. “No, they only use corporal punishment for the really bad stuff. Stealing, insubordination. Those kinds of things. I just had to do extra calisthenics. Or scrub toilets.”

Kanan relaxed, exhaling audibly through his nose.

What would he have done if they had hurt me? Ezra wondered.
