Maybe they would feel better in the morning — maybe they wouldn't.
Tonight though, they wouldn't feel better, not really. But they could try to feel close at least, could try to keep the hopelessness and loneliness at bay.
The motel they stopped at after crossing back into Kansas was old and dingy but it felt familiar, soothing in a way. With everything that had changed, everything that wasn't how it should be anymore — at least this remained the same, the old musty smell, the same rough sheets, the cranky pipes.
No kissing, just pulling and holding and keeping the other as close as possible.
Missionary for once, backs burned with scratches and skin littered with finger shaped bruises from holding on too tight.
Oxygen recycled between lungs, breathing in the same air in hopes of not letting the unknown in.
Sore flesh from not enough spit but there was no time to waste, no time to let thoughts fester.
No kisses, just salty breaths shared.
It wasn't great, maybe not even good but it still left their muscles shaking in the end. Stickiness between them.
Steady heartbeats to lull them to sleep because maybe they would feel better in the morning — maybe.
