SPN S2:E20 - What Is and What Should Never Be
The djinn doesn't grant you a wish, it only makes you believe it does.
Dean's djinn dream is him living with a nurse ("respectable [job]", he says) girlfriend he isn't really tempted to have sex with*, john having recently died of a stroke, his mom being alive, him and sam not being hunters, no deal between azazel and his mother, sam not having demon blood in him, and so sam+jess being at stanford.
It means that all of this isn't really what he wants, it's the version of events the he thinks would have happened if only no one in his family ever got involved with the supernatural.
*by the way this reads as something very specific to me but jensen doesn't want us to talk openly about it so i guess we should just start flagging again, eh?
