supercrit plan
what I want to have for supercrit: Thinking about output in general - I’d really like to see more than just ‘graphics in a space’ what if I could design and develop a system to help empower children when going to visit their parents in prison? - care package mock up - Spatial mock up/miniature > full journey in prison environment - after > either during visit or post visit?
layout plan of prints leading up to desk + what’s on the desk
box idea - how might you make the prep kit exciting? what’s in the prep kit?

Justice summit
Andrew Little https://www.facebook.com/AndrewLittleLabour/videos/2131769970168442/
- Stressed the fact that we know Māori are over represented and that there are literacy problems + that we are and need to continue to do things to provide solutions in these areas. - Stressed the cycle of young offenders (140-150): 95% of which are victims of family/sexual violence.
Kelvin Davis https://www.facebook.com/KelvinDavisLabour/videos/1908909755889582/ What the people want: - “Having Māori solve Māori’s own problems” - would be of greater benefit to understanding cultures. - Mental Health links into crime. - Put the money back into the community. - Investing in people who go into prisons and start the rehab process there rather than waiting till they’re out. - Resources into children to grow them into good adults. - Community effort to make the changes on a system that we know doesn’t work. - Get back to the community and find out what’s going on. Kelvin Davis: - it’s about whānau - why didn’t we do something as a govt and as māori? why didnt we help? > re gang culture to feed kids etc. - there is an ugly reality in this country > we are proud of so much but it’s ugly - worse for our wahine māori and tamariki - successive govts have failed - personal issue > our people! - what do WE (govt + māori together) need to do to make sure that you don’t come back here? - they do not want this life for their kids - changed due to tikanga māori > but whānau don’t know this new man - the system is not working and our whānaus are hurting the most - we need to work together to help our people, in our communities, in our prisons and when they come out. - we are punishing children who are born into a big whānau & continued to punish his offspring and generations to come - connect them to their whānau and their communities - better people not broken people - how are we going to take up the challenge that others were too timid or too hardened to accept? rimutaka prison map
Trying to imagine what the path might be that a child/person takes when journeying from arriving on the prison grounds to the visiting hall. This is an imagine trail - I don’t know what the actual trail is - but emphasises how long that journey is and what a child/person might see through out that journey - i.e. first thing is high wired fences and concrete buildings + guards.

NZ Native animals
https://www.backpackerguide.nz/11-animals-and-birds-unique-to-new-zealand/ Potential animals: - Kea > cheeky, bold/brave, adventurous - Falcon > courageous - Maui Dolphin > adventurous - Little blue penguin > little, calm, thoughtful - Kiwi > too clichéd?

Kea
https://www.keaconservation.co.nz/kea-information/kea-national-kaitiaki-taonga/
- Curious + attracted to people + love of new things - Mountain bird > Kaitiaki of a harsh environment > prison as a harsh environment > change it to an environment of adventure > guardian of children going through a prison - seed distributors > distributors of knowledge? imagination? courage? - “cleaner” - intelligent & wise > literacy and educational support + whānau support - olive green, camouflage in wild - orange, black, red, yellow

Kids stories
Using previous research on what was already out there, I discovered that this book is available in NZ:
Available from Whitcoulls - going to try and get a copy of it! Ideally I’d love to do a story about my Kea but also would love make use of resources that are already available - maybe I could just design the cover of what a book could be?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Storybook mums/dads
https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/books/93969097/how-prison-mums-can-still-read-their-kid-a-bedroom-story
another resources for the prep/care pack.
one of the books used in the programme. A Samoan tale. This resource could be recorded before a parent goes fully to jail - i.e. during the period waiting for trial etc so in custody? When is the prep/care kit given to the child?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Calendar
A really rough mock up of a countdown calendar - could this be more interactive like an advent calendar - how might it be used to maintain relationships and engagement between parents/caregivers at home and in prison?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Full Kit
Above = almost full kit. Currently - two stories + story book mums/dads resource + kea soft toy + advent calendar
