The Bear Season 4 unintentionally parallels Carmy’s relationship with Syd and his relationship with Claire.
Despite them always denying Carmry's relationship with Syd, she ends up with the most chemistry and interesting relationship with him. In a way he goes through the same emotional beats with her as he does with Claire, but with Syd it’s always better.
Earlier in the season he has that weird fight with Claire and they talk over the other, and it supposed to break our hearts to se them drift apart in this wire space, we’re supposed to root for them to find their way back to one another, but it just comes off as vapid and somewhat empty.
In the last episode, he has a similar fight with Syd about the restaurant and all the things they've hidden from each other, all the things they've hinted at but never said out loud, and the angst is so strong it’s palpable. It hurts to watch her finally confront him with all the shit he’s put her through and what he keeps putting her through.
It means something when he says he believes in her more than he ever believed in himself and that she's the bear. It hurts to think of how he see's himself as her Michael. It hurts when she tells him he's supposed to be there. Because, we’ve seen everything that has gotten them to this point.
Even if Claire was going to work as a character, she should have been there day one. She was rushed as character and thrown in as a reaction to the audience focusing on Carmy and Syd, so even if people don’t ship SydCarmy, Claire has been set up to fail. If they slowed down and fleshed her out, she would be disappointing, but not as hated because she would actually make sense compared to the rest of the cast.
Claire just pops up back in his life, Syd pops in his life for the first time.
Ckaire is supposed to be easy for him to go to, but it’s actually hard for him.
He easily talks to Syd about everything. It builds up and eventually explodes out, but its exactly hat he does with Claire, but only with the conversations with Syd do we learn more about him, or we see a true vulnerability from Carmy.
Everyone loves Claire. Guess what? Everyone loves Syd!! They practically adopted her in.
Carmy literally says, everyone in that restaurant would take a bullet for you, and he is right.
The whole Claire bear is so great! She’s so nice! We all love her!
Everything that’s been said about Claire, Syd has unintentionally been written to have, or maybe it was. . . we just weren’t supposed to root for her and Carmy to be anything.
