I hate that we all instinctively feel that sabriel might die in book 5. (Insert the 'no god pls no' gif from the office)
Is this a commonly held belief? I thought it was just something my brain fixated on, and then other people who would be sad if she were to die (so, pretty much everyone) - see @coaxionunlimited, who voiced what everyone would feel if Sabriel died - but don’t really think it’s going to happen. But I agree with the proposed gif choice, and match you a gif
Let’s check this out. For science, Old Kingdom fandom, who thinks Sabriel will die in Book 5 (regardless of wishing it wouldn’t happen)?
I’m counting likes as ‘yes’, and if you reblog, comment with your opinion (and why, to make things interesting).
The first time I picked up a copy of Sabriel I was in the fifth grade. I was going through a lot of family stuff, and it was quickly forgotten and put aside. When my best friend asked me later that year if I had finished it, I lied and said I had, because she was smart and a reader and I wanted her to think well of me.
She gave me a copy of Lirael for my birthday. I still hadn’t finished Sabriel.
I was so ashamed of my lie that I put the book on my bookshelf and ignored it for years.
I was a senior in high school when I finally put away my guilt (there were other issues weighing on our friendship by then, and thinking that it was a gift from her caused its own breed of pain) and read the book. I was bored, so I didn’t bother reading Sabriel first, I just grabbed it from the bookshelf and started reading it in the bath. I probably finished it in two or three days. I found a copy of Abhorsen in the library at my school and blasted through that as well. Next I picked up Sabriel, realizing at that point that I should have read it first. Despite having read Lirael first, and despite identifying with Lirael more, I found myself rereading Sabriel at least once a year for years to come.
Later I acquired copies of the audiobooks read by Tim Curry and have since added them to the collection of audiobooks I listen to when I can’t sleep, meaning that they take a place aside Harry Potter in heart. The highest compliment I can pay.
Sometimes, I admit, I replay the scene in Holehallow when Mogget is high on catnip and Sabriel first meets Touchstone. I think I’ll go listen to it now...
Does the Walker choose the Path, or the Path the Walker?
A very happy 20th anniversary to my all-time favorite book series! I know I’ve posted a painting of Lirael for Sabriel day, but I hope you’ll all forgive me-- I’ve been working on this for ages and today seemed like the best day to finally finish-- even if it was so close to the wire.
I’ve been the hugest fan of Garth Nix’s Abhorsen series since the first day I read them, and I literally cannot recommend them enough. These books mean so, so much to me.
Here’s to another 20! May the Charter protect us all.
It's still Sabriel Day for me, so I'm making sure to quickly get up a little something for one of the most influential fictional characters to young me!
Last May I was immeasurably lucky enough to meet Garth Nix and receive a signed copy of Clariel at BEA in New York. I hadn’t read the Old Kingdom series in probably over a decade, but I nevertheless made a mad dash to the line and spent the next forty or so minutes gushing over lines and scenes still clear in my memory as ever with those also waiting. Needless to say, I went home that night and immediately devoured Clariel and soon followed suit with the original trilogy, relishing every word and genuinely delighted to find that the series was even more brilliant and arresting than I remembered.
Upon finishing, though, I had a whole list of questions, largely regarding the backstory of several characters--I jotted them down as I went and saved them in a draft on here and am now publishing (and crossing my fingers) for Sabriel Day. (Under a cut because of spoilers)
What are the rest of the seven like? Are there any remnants of them left as well?
How the fuck did Kibeth become a soapstone dog in the Clayr's Library?
What happened to Arielle?
What do the -el name endings signify? How do they connect to Astarael and Yrael?
Where did the name Mogget come from?
What did Astarael want with Mogget?
Why was Mogget forbidden to take on his man form in the presence of other Abhorsens? What happened?
Why was Yrael bound in the Beginning? What did he do?
What happened to the Wallmakers?
What happens to Nick?
Who died when Orannis was bound the first time? Was it Saraneth?
I found Sabriel through a friend telling me I reminded her of Sabriel herself. Naturally I had to go and find out more about the like-me character, if only for my own vanity. Imagine the preening when I found out who I’d been compared to! Birds stood in awe of my preening ability that day.
I fell so hard for Sabriel the character. She was badass, but kind and considerate. She could take care of herself and when she was left on her own, she didn’t mope and break down like I would, instead she moved forward to face her destiny. She is an inspiration to me and I will always have a special place in my heart for this book and these characters. Though I’d happily marry Touchstone, Sabriel will always be my favorite. :)
