Here Comes The Sun || Lachlan, Lance, and Lia
Lachlan had now raised enough children that he felt like he could predict most needs and that he knew what he could expect from his little ones. The surprise of twins was exactly that, a surprise. Their development had been a big concern of his from the moment he started reading about twins. Lachlan could rattle off the worries of development like he could rattle of the notes of any opera. Still, knowing did little to put him at ease. He worried that they wouldn’t talk or walk with the other kids their age and he feared that they would be teased for being small. If only he could see the future, neither would be the case. Lancelot and Ophelia may have been a smidgen early, as twins often were, but they were happy, healthy, and so loved by everyone that met them.
When February 5th rolled around, Lachlan pulled out his camera and their respective milestones albums and reflected on just how far the duo had come. At two months they were engaging with story times, loving all the sounds and facial expressions he, Adele, Hamish, and Erin made with them. Their tummy times was complete with Lia looking around and Lance doing mini-pushups. They’d been stretchy little monsters with slowly improving sleep habits. Now at three months they seemed like almost different babies. Rolling around had let to a need for emptier cribs. Then, the levels of drool and babbling had made for a noisier and messier house. The most interesting, at least to Lachlan, had become a preference for certain people.
The noises in their home were never-ending. Of course, this was no surprise to anyone with the number of children now up to five, but it did make for many a child waking up in the night, not just the twins. Both the twins had a preference for their mother, settling faster ing they could curl up against her soft skin. Lachlan didn’t blame them, doing the same thing after his turn was up during a twin feeding. Lachlan had learned that if they wanted a little laugh and playtime that he was wanted for singing and faces and tickles. The twins had also started to recognize Hamish and Erin, too, settling quickly with their grandparents when they were fussy. The drama came in during Sunday nights out when there were five kids and themselves to eat and now the twins were insisting they only snuggled with the familiar. It was Micah that gave them a helpful tip, to cover the person holding the babies in a familiar blanket, that way the smell and textures surrounding them were more like mom and dad.
Every day was a learning experience, but nothing in the world could convince Lachlan that this wasn’t the life he was meant to be living.
