#mayvinylchallenge Day 3: Lucky find / hardest to acquire. Lotta candidates here. My original pressings of Mothers of Invention’s We’re Only in It for the Money and Violent Femmes we’re both lightning-strike finds: hard to find albums I’d had on my wishlist for years, and that I stumbled on while record shopping minding my own business with incredibly low price tags. ($11 and $8 respectively. ELEVEN American dollars for an original Mothers on Verve in perfect condition!? Really!) Tom Waits’s Nighthawks at the Diner was the result of a real search—I’d loved the album for over a decade and chased down a bunch of copies but found them lacking, until I met a guy in a record store who was selling his and met him a week later in a parking lot. And Saccharine Trust’s Surviving You Always is my only original SST, never been reissued, so I had to try a lot of eBay auctions before I finally found mine. I could go on, but I won’t. #frankzappa #violentfemmes #tomwaits #saccharinetrust #vinyl #vinyladay #lp #vinyloftheday #vinyligclub #vinyljunkie #vinylcommunity #instavinyl #vinylgram https://www.instagram.com/p/B_uzN7Ip0p_/?igshid=2j8hc8z1ii5f

Days #3076-3083 I took a little internet hiatus, don’t feel bad if you didn’t notice...even my wife didn’t (or at least she pretended not to in hopes this would just go away) but in an effort to not clog your feed I’m placing as many as I can together. #minorthread #tshirtwars #hudsonmowhawke #saccharinetrust #X #drunkinjuns #mazzystar #jesusandmarychain #superchunk #Oasis #digoutyoursoul #teenagerockinroadtrip #seasonsofyourday #damageandjoy #paganicons #butter
What’s the most obscure gem in your collection? On today’s #superfriendssunday, @underground_cavement asked us to pick a weirdo, something a bit obscure, different, or that sticks out in our collection. I went for the obscure side. Saccharine Trust’s Surviving You Always has never been reissued—though SST has kept the rest of the band’s work in print, this was issued exactly once on LP and cassette, and never again. It’s not really known why… could be some possible controversy about the content, but knowing SST, it’s always been my theory that they lost the master tapes. Saccharine Trust was part of the LA punk scene that produced Black Flag, X, Germs, Minutemen, etc. They’re Latino and bring an incredible avant garde jazz sensibility to their punk. I’ve loved them ever since hearing their track on The Blasting Concept, “A Human Certainty.” This might be their best album, but if you can’t find an original, you’re stuck with the vinyl rip on YouTube! I monitored eBay for about a year before finally winning one at a price I could live with. It’s my only original SST, and a treasure. Saccharine Trust, Paganicons (bootleg, 2014)
During the lockdown I haven’t been getting many records. I also somehow need the comfort of the staples of my collection more than the adventure of getting into newer stuff. Also, my amp suddenly broke down last week. So I’ve been listening to records just on one speaker. At least I still have a house and a job. And a speaker. Can’t complain.
Ahhh, early SST Records. You were so good. Paganicons came out in 1981 and stands out as one of the milestones on the road from LA punk to whatever experimental clusterfuck came after that. Of course Joe Baiza would showcase his incredible guitar skills on later records, but on these short eight songs the bands hits the sweet spot of punks shaking off their chains and running to the other side of the mirror.
For what is widely considered to be a somewhat hardcore record, it isn’t loud at all. Mike Watt lending a helping hand to Spot at the production is really an indicator of what they went for here. As many of the bands that became legendary from this era, they really only sound like themselves, but if you could draw a line that goes from the Germs to the Big Boys to the Dead Kennedys, Saccharine Trust would be caught in the tangle.
Everything is special about this record, but nothing hits you hard like Jack Brewer’s lyrics and delivery. Sounding like a speed-addled punk crashing a slam poetry show, he proceeds to hold a mirror up to (mostly) men’s worst vices: the principle-bending, secretly violent, turn-a-blind-eye-to-injustice, ambitious-as-in-oppressive, tyrannical, warmongering men of the modern West could learn a thing or two from Paganicons. This bootleg sounds great and comes with a beautiful lyric sheet.
