Snake skin jewelry and decor
I personally enjoy taxidermy and the use of animal fur and skins as decoration. While I don’t believe I’ve posted too many images of skulls or animal hide, I will place several links to etsy stores under a cut just in case people are squeamish.
The purpose of this post is about snakes as sacred animals in Romuva. Since people may not feel comfortable owning a snake or may not live near wooded areas where snakes are visible, alternative ways to ways honor snakes and invoke a snake's presence may be beneficial. I personaly would not own a snake as a pet, so I may go with one of the stores listed below to display snake skin on my altar.
Each store listed clearly states that the animal remains were either gathered in the woods, acquired through thrift stores, or medical schools. The majority of snake skins that I will be linking are shedded snake skin, so you can rest easy knowing the snake was not harmed in the process. To reiterate, these remains were gathered ethically. Animal bones and hide listed on these stores come from old medical store inventory, are found in the woods, or may be roadkill that the store owner found and cleaned. I had several science teachers and educators mention doing this in their spare time to better educate their students.
Sacred Serpent is named after the zaltys or zalgtis: a revered grass snake, indigenous to the Baltic lands of East Prussia, Latvia and Lithuania. Zaltys is known as the sentinel or messenger of the ancient Baltic deities and plays a significant role in the mythology and lore of the region. Sacred Serpent serves to explore the culture of the Baltic region and its old beliefs and also as a voice for ROMUVA, the Indigenous Lithuanian Religion.
Archived Romuva-Canada Geocities page with a list of gods and goddesses, holidays, popular legends, articles on paganism in Lithuania. A good, older resource, the site is listed on the “Romuva-Siaures Amerika” facebook page, though links on the site have not yet been archived.
