synopsis: After a day that feels impossible to get through, you need somewhere safe to fall apart.
a/n: my depression has been kicking my ass but it's wtv, hope u enjoy<3
You wake up to your blaring alarm on your nightstand. The dread of the day sinks deep into your chest. You just lie there for a while, staring at the ceiling.
Finally, you get the energy to get out of bed. When your feet hit the cold floor, an achy feeling settles in your bones. Slowly tugging on your work clothes, harsh fabric covering your body. Combing through the knots in your hair, making it look presentable. You know doing your skincare would be good, but not today, so you just brush your teeth.
Trying to cover the dark circles under your eyes with concealer. It helps a little, but not enough. You check the time on your phone 7:58.
"Shit, I can't deal with this right now," you mutter to yourself, quickly grabbing everything you need. Heading out the door to your car, the morning rush hour is horrible, making you ten minutes late.
Walking through the doors of the building, bright fluorescent lights burning your eyes.
The whole day passes in a blur. One minute you're staring at the clock. The next you're staring at your computer screen. Every conversation feels exhausting. On top of it all, you forgot your lunch. You feel completely drained, waiting for the day to end.
The moment the car door shuts, you breathe a heavy sigh. You slump back into the driver's seat.
Silence.
Your hands rest on your lap, not ready to start the car just yet. You close your eyes, telling yourself it's only for a minute. The minute turns into three.
Eventually, you force yourself to sit upright and start the car. The drive feels longer than usual. Every red light seems to last forever.
Pulling into Jonatan's driveway, the porch light glows against the evening sky.
You sit in the driveway for a moment, questioning if you should go home, climb into bed, and shut the world out for the night.
Instead, you grab your bag and force yourself out of the car. The cool evening air brushes against your skin, making your way up the driveway and the porch stairs.
The door opens before you can even knock. Jonatan stands there, leaning against the frame.
"Hey, sweetheart," he murmurs, pulling you in for a hug. The warmth of his body soothes that empty feeling in you.
You don't have the energy to respond; all you do is hold him tighter.
"Long day?" he asks, helping you inside.
"Mhm," you hum tiredly, quickly rubbing your eye, feeling tears forming.
"Okay." He takes your bag from your shoulder.
"Did you eat?" The question makes you pause. A second too long. His forehead creases a little.
"Go sit, I'll get you somethin'." He says, gently nudging your shoulder towards the couch.
The second your body hits the soft cushions of the couch; a deep breath escapes your mouth. You hadn't realized how tense your shoulders were until now.
The sound of Jonatan moving around the kitchen spreads through the quiet house. Fridge door opening. Microwave beeping. Drawers closing.
A few more minutes past before he comes back. A bowl of warmed up pasta and water in his hands.
"Here. Eat." He says handing them to you. You give him a small smile.
"Thank you, baby." You mumble already taking a bite. Jonatan sits near you on the couch. Watching something playing on the TV.
After a few more bites, you start feeling full, even though you know you haven't eaten much. The bowl rests in your lap. Your eyes drift out the window. The voices from whatever show is playing blend together into meaningless noise.
Jonathan glances over. His eyes flick from your face to the bowl, then back again.
"You done already?" he asks. You can hear the concern in his voice. Looking down at the pasta, mostly still there.
"Yeah," you answer quietly. His brows furrow.
"You barely ate."
"I'm just not that hungry." You lie, trying to hold yourself together for a bit longer. Jonatan moves closer to you, knee touching yours. His hand caresses your cheek.
"...Hey, look at me for a second." He says softly. Tears start burning your eyes as you slowly turn your head towards him. Jonatan's expression softens,
"Oh, sweetheart." He murmurs.
You immediately look away from him. His hand stays at your cheek, gently wiping away the falling tears.
"No, no. I'm fine. I swear." The words crumble out of your mouth.
His hand moves loose hair out of your face. You quickly cover your face with your hands, crying into them.
"Yeah?" His voice barely above a whisper. "Then why are you hiding, hmm?" The question only makes you cry harder.
Shaky sobs escapes through your hands before you quietly mumble. "I-I don't know."
Jonatan lifts the bowl from your lap.
"Hey, hey." His voice remains soft. Just there.
"C'mere."
His arms pulling you close, you're body tangling with his. The way his big arms wrap around your body makes you cry harder, because it's the first time today you've felt at peace.
Your face in between his collar and jaw, familiar scent of his cologne filling your lungs.
"Breathe for me, sweet girl." Jonatan mumbles.
The rise and fall of his breathing slowly starts grounding you, bring you back to your mind.
The tears still fall but not as fast. Your breathing evens out. The deep ache in your chest seems less unbearable. Heavy exhaustion comes over you now.
You stay curled up against Jonatan for a few more minutes. Neither of you talking. Just breathing.
"Think I wanna shower." Your voice comes out rough from all the crying.
"Yeah, okay."
–
When you step out of the shower, Jonatan wraps you in a towel. Your wet hair clings to your neck. He picks up the clothes he had gotten you while in the shower.
He kneels in front of your feet, guiding your legs into a pair of boxers and pulling them up your to your hips.
"Lift your arms." He says, standing up. He gently tugs the shirt over your body. The fabric swallowing you whole. His hands stay at the hem a second too long.
"Bed." He mutters, pressing at soft kiss to your forehead.
The moment you lay down, your eyes are struggling to stay open. Jonatan follows after you. You instantly move up against his chest.
"Thank you." You whisper before closing your eyes.
"Get some sleep, my baby." He whispers back, holding you tighter.
