There is a time for silence. There is a time waiting your turn. But if you know how you feel, and you clearly know what you need to say, you’ll know it. I don’t think you should wait, I think you should speak now.

10 & 4!!
10. describe your writing in five sentences or less.
as brief as possible. too many obscure metaphors. fragmented. makes readers think “why did i just read that”. the reason i don’t sleep at night.
4. why do you like writing? what inspired you to put paper to pen?
i write because i can’t speak the way other people do. i keep them in until the feelings turn to ink and overflow in the shape of words.
as for what inspired me, i’ve posted this story before but i will copy/paste it here because it is vital to understanding my origins as a writer:an old teacher of mine used to tell me that i needed to share my writing. i was thirteen and as i have my whole life, was writing regularly but had never allowed anyone to read it. we did these journal entries for homework which weren’t always specific assignments so we could freewrite. my teacher was one of the only ones who read my writing in this way, and he kept telling me that people had to read it and that i should share it with everyone i could. he literally wrote in the margins of a lot of my essays and journal entries with personal responses that have stuck with me through the years. in many ways, he was the most impactful teacher i’ve ever had. he taught me so much about the world and about myself. i kept saying “maybe one day. maybe one day i’ll let other people read the stuff i write.” but i didn’t because i am reserved by nature, and deep down i was afraid to.then that summer, my teacher died. we’d all suspected something was wrong when he started giving away his stuff and not showing up to school, but he never told us that he was sick; he just kept teaching us everything he could, even if it didn’t quite fit with the curriculum. he told us stories about his life, about his travels to other countries, about everything that made him a person.i was devastated. in the depths of that grief, something clicked. the school year following his death, i wrote a piece about him in english class. my english teacher asked my permission to send it around to other teachers who had known him, and i got all these responses back. i cried reading them. i realized that my old teacher had been right. since i could write words that could so deeply affect people, i had a responsibility to share them.later that year they held a memorial service for him at my school and i was asked to read my piece out loud. the principal ended up having to read it for me because i cried too much, but everyone there, including my teacher’s children, heard my words. i could see the reactions in their eyes and it was unlike anything i had ever experienced before. it was like… i meant something on a whole other level that i hadn’t even known existed.a year later, i finished three drafts of my first novel and got a short story published. then a year after that, i developed my chronic illness and lost the ability to do everything except write. even when i was bedridden and in pain, i could still type on most days. it turned out that my old teacher’s encouragement to continue writing meant more to me than i could have ever imagined back then. he changed my life. he is what inspired me to start sharing my writing and still inspires me every day.
get to know the writer!
