How about number 12, Candles?

A year after they come to Kirkwall, Hawke scrapes together a handful of coins, and buys two candles. One for father, one for Bethany.

He places them on the windowsill in Gamlen’s house and lights them with a lick of magic from his fingertips. For the hour that they last, one corner of Lowtown is beautiful - a mournful beauty, but beauty nonetheless.

A year later, he buys three candles. Carver is alive, but he is not here, and the silence where his voice should be is a void that must be filled. Even if a fleeting candle flame could never substitute for Carver’s stubborn, burning presence… it helps.

Three years later, he buys four candles, and it’s Anders who lights them with a flicker of spirit-tinged magic, because Hawke’s hands aren’t steady enough to do it. And because there’s a raw clump of hollowness inside him, too cold and deep for him to pull magic from (his mother is dead she is dead and he is empty.)

He lets Anders pull him close, warming his hands with a healer’s soothing touch, and he thinks, I will never let there be five candles.
