This week, Robin Sukhadia aka Tablapusher did an awesome talk at the LACMA on portrayal of Mughal culture in the Bollywood epics Mughal-e-Azam (1960) and Jodhaa Akbar (2008). After the lecture, with images from the various Bollywood Mughal playing in the background, The Sadubas did a remix set with special guest Clinton Patterson (trumpet). Listen up for this beautiful set.

For our fifth installment of our Mishthi Music Mixtape series, we turn to Los Angeles-based tablatronic duo, SADUBAS! Listen to their mixtape - heavy on the beats and with respect to their heroes: the great Charanjit Singh, State of Bengal, RD Burman, Talvin Singh, Miles Davis, Asha Bhosle and more. Comprised of DJ/producer Ameet Mehta and tabla artist Robin Sukhadia, SADUBAS (aka The Sadhus of Bass), converges 808 & 909 drum patterns with classical Indian rhythms and 70s Bollywood vibes to create psychedelic soundscapes that are one part trip hop and two parts cinematic south Asia.

The Sadubas (now of Los Angeles) have finally released a new track! I imagine it’s inspired by the repetitive beat you hear while riding on a train. This track Railways in particular has some fantastic Bollywood samples.

SADUBAS, aka The Sadhus of Bass, converges classical Indian rhythms with 70s Bollywood vibes to create psychedelic soundscapes that are one part trip hop and two parts cinematic south Asia. DJ/turntablist Ameet Mehta and tabla artist Robin Sukhadia bring a global lounge feel to their live sets, which feature classical instrumentation alongside midi controllers.
