Day 6: Jeju Island & the Ferry
It was a lazy morning & we decided to have brunch at a restaurant nearby - our friends had recommended the Abalone porridge (which was green btw, which is strange cause the pictures of abalone porridge we saw in Seoul weren't green). We walked down to the restaurant but realized that they only start serving lunch at 11am (which is common throughout South Korea). We walked over to the nearby Family Mart (a convenience store chain), bought two small bottles of coffee, sat down and waited for 11am to creep by. Seeing that I had totally forgotten to let actual people write in my travel diary, I got my travel partner to be my first "friend".
& so, we had our abalone porridge. & IT WAS HORRIBLE (& that's putting it lightly). We went to the same shop that our friends did, and the porridge was the same green they described yet our experiences were entirely different (side note: my friends actually went back for a 2nd helping on their last day in Jeju). For one, it smelt like dog - & no, I don't mean dog as in dog meat, more like dog fur. My travel partner & I had previously owned dogs so it felt strange eating something that smelt like our ex-BFFs. The taste, on the other hand, was.. indescribable. The ratio of soy sauce we had to put in in order to finish at least half of it to that of the porridge - 2 : 1
After our very exciting brunch, we decided to explore the other side of the bridge featured in the previous post. The night before, we noticed that there was a guard at the end and the area was closed. Who would've thought that the area across the bridge was actually an island?! Legend has it that 새섬 (Saeseom), also known as Sod Island, was actually the summit of 한라산 (Hallasan aka Mt. Halla) after it was thrown into the sea by a volcanic eruption (text, although somewhat edited in structure, was taken off a board at the entrance of the island).
We followed the crowd towards a path of rocks jutting out of the side of island. To describe this path of rocks, one would just need to use one word: exhausting. The trek towards the edge of the rocks and back was more of a climb and crawl, rather than a walk. Still, many travelled across the ups & downs of what looked like a rocky ravine. The trek was, but of course, a most rewarding one - we could see the edges and cliffs of the island, the neighbouring island and the waves crashing against the rocks at the bottom. As we continued off the rocky path and onto the designated foot path, we met with yet another rocky path! There were 3 in total and (I'm quite sure I can say this) we were the only ones who climbed/crawled/trekked through all 3!
After a long day, we headed back to the hiking inn, got our bags and headed for the ferry terminal for our 7pm ferry to 부산 (Busan). The beds in the ferry were quite cosy & there weren't many people around. The only thing that made the ferry journey all the more 'enjoyable' was the smell. As the ferry set off, a smell overwhelmed the entire room. We couldn't exactly tell where the smell came from but it was just bad. It was like a mixture of sewage and raw waste (I shiver at the thought of it). The smell, coupled with the fact that there were a bunch of noisy 아잠마s (one of which had a horrible repetitive laugh and spent most of the night either shouting at someone or laughing), made for a bad night's sleep or rather the lack of it. Nevertheless, we were on our way to 부산 to meet our last Couchsurfing host!
