Interview with Saffron Aurora (”Lost & Found”)
Q. What were your major influences for “Lost & Found”?
A. A lot of the inspiration came from my own experiences and the experiences I've seen my friends have, haha. There's this trend of young people in my generation having to work multiple “side hustles”' in order to pay their bills or do what they love, but there's also this mentality that it's normal to overwork yourself to the point that you fall apart-- which happens quite literally to Frankie in “Lost & Found”.
Q. What comics do you enjoy most? Did any of these find their way into “Lost & Found”?
A. Hmm, I generally like comics with a bit of humor in them, but my interests vary. If it's a good story, I'll read it! I'd also say that art is a huge thing for me-- comics with dynamic or stylistic art can really draw me in. The webcomic Devil's Candy definitely inspired me with its gothic art style and anime humor.
Q. As a woman creator, how do you feel about the current state of diversity and representation in comics?
A. I think that it depends on the community; I'm not entirely familiar with the “mainstream” comics community since I find most of the new and interesting and diverse stuff to be in the indie community, and maybe I've been spoiled by how good the indie comics/games scene is here in Toronto. I will say that I don't think I read a lot of comics when I was a kid—mostly manga or graphic novels—but I've read a lot of good, interesting stuff lately from both big name and local publishers.
