A thunderous sound tore through the stillness, a splintering of wood and a second to follow as the tree crashed to the rocks below. The churning waters below now only just licking at the highest branches. Likely, it’d later be taken by the tide.
Whoops....
AUGH! What a waste of wood!
Woodie grumbles to himself, sticking his axe into a fresh stump as he passes it, before sitting down on one opposite with his head in his hands. What was wrong with him, today!? First he nearly forgets his axe at home, then he has an unfortunate encounter with a couple of angry forest spirits that took far too long to get to calm down, now he’s chopping trees the wrong way round without noticing? That was almost a crime!
At the very least, it was still cold, and he still had some wood he could steal a few bites of to make up for the time and effort he’d just wasted chopping down a tree he wouldn’t be able to use. Winter was coming soon, as well, announced by the thin dusting of snow on the ground. A welcoming sight for the lumberjack, but still so odd at the same time. It felt like there should be more of it this time of year, but either way, it was near the time when the sap would stop running. Trees were easier to chop then, meaning more trees could be taken down. Needless to say, Woodie was entirely and totally ready for it.
Well, not now maybe. Now he was just kind of frustrated with himself. In all the years the man had spent carrying Lucy’s axe around before she’d found herself free of her binding, and the many more he’d spent in his chosen profession, you’d think he’d be on top of these things no matter what! He took pride in his skill as a lumberjack, and today was certainly not helping that pride.
Woodie fiddles with his gloves for a moment, before opting to pull them off entirely. Good as they were for keeping the cold out while he was working, they weren’t so good when trying to dig in his pockets.
He lets a breath out through his nose as he chews on one of the many twigs he kept in his pockets, a replacement for chewing his nails, as well as a snack. At least today couldn’t get worse... probably.
You never knew with The Constant.
