Sage was gone.
Sage took Doodle upstairs and gave her a thorough exam. The old dog’s affliction would definitely require a full clinic’s services, but that would have to wait until morning. For now she could make Doodle comfortable and help level out her temperature.
In the spirit of giving and love, Rocco made another appearance to see his beloved family. Sage was the first to see him this time and she couldn’t have been happier to see her old friend, especially on this day of all days.
“How have you been, old boy?” she asked him as she rubbed his foggy ears. The sensation was chilly and tickled a little. “Are there plenty of soft couches and beds for you to lounge on? Lots of good things to munch?” She knew that she wouldn’t get any answers from him about the other side. He was happy, though, and that was enough.
Back home it’s Sage’s birthday and-
Oh no...
Toby hadn’t forgotten what he heard. He knew he’d heard his father’s barking that day. He still missed his old dad and sometimes it made him sad. When he was sad he would follow around his mom or Ethan. Neither were home, though, so he decided to follow Sage around as she cleaned.
“Oh, my poor girl,” Sage lamented. “You’re positively miserable, aren’t you?” She rubbed Doodle comfortingly behind her ears. Doodle leaned in to Sage’s left hand, beckoning her to rub behind her right ear a little harder. Sage obliged, drawing out a little whine from her old friend.
“Alright you, follow me,” Sage said as she stood. She patted her leg, signalling Doodle to follow her up the stairs. Doodle whined again but obeyed.
The specter of death arrived, to Sage’s surprise. She’d seen this dark form when her grandmother had died the first time; She’d fought for her life then. She didn’t expect the same dark figure to appear when her best friend passed.
“Alright, let’s see how the idea goes over,” Riya said.
“Agreed,” Sage said. “I’ll call my dads and see what they say.”
“Phew! Mom! Dad! Zaza! Doodle’s been in something!”
“And what do you do when you discover a dirty pet?” Sam asked.
“Bathe them,” Ethan responded, “Except when it’s skunk!”
“Skun- Oh, Watcher...” Riya groaned and dropped her head. The essence of skunk was faint, but definitely there. “Definitely skunk. How did we not notice?”
“We were too focused on our discussion,” Sage said as she stood. “I’ll call my dads if one of you could...” She looked between her spouses who immediately dropped their fists on the table. Several ferocious rounds of rock-paper-scissors commenced before they gave up and agreed to skunk-bathe Doodle together.
