@sagittarius-studies just asked me what my research is on and I tried to answer but the tumblr app ate it, so let's try this again!

I'm working on complex chronic illnesses like chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and multiple chemical sensitivity, and the improvisational, DIY research and treatment practices that people who suffer from them engage in when they are unable to access conventional medical treatment. It's an issue of medical epistemology, but it's also an opening into a broader meta-question about the limits of knowledge and what we can do with these intractable phenomena other than "know" them.

Hello! It is called Xkit version 1.9.10! It is a google chrome extension. I just googled it and downloaded it. (Make sure to get the updated version because the outdated ones no longer work.) After that, I was able to go into the program’s settings and add the auto-tagger feature that I wanted.

@sagittarius-studies Good overall, I got in!! 😀🎉🎊 My interview was on May 1st and I heard back on May 11th that I was accepted. I’m thinking I could make a video or something talking about the interview process if anybody wants to know what it was like. It was a little odd, a group interview!

I start on October 1st. :)

it is in the UK! i’m sure the programme is much better than what i’ve experienced but i just ended up with a useless contact at the school and a useless liaison. send me a dm if you want any more info though :)

omg thats so cute!! so id do one of two things: the subtle route: start slowly putting in things about yourself in your snaps. put the book you are reading at the moment next to the plant you're snapping. play your fave songs in the background while you record a video (and even hum/sing along, or laugh at what your cat is doing, or reply to someone Who Just Happened To Call Your Name From Another Room But Not Really as you're about to end the snap). put your hand/funny socks in the frame. 2/2) the daring route: send a selfie out of the blue saying Hi! How are you? or something along those lines in between your usual snaps--take them by surprise! or if that's too exciting a start, put a handwritten note next to the plant snap saying something like "How are you today? :)" or even "I'd like to get to know you better! What's your favourite (x)?" Seize the moment, girl! Go after what your heart desires! :)

The presentation could’ve gone better but also so much worse so I guess I’ll have to wait for results in like a month or something.

But I can tell you what it was about

The idea was this: there is under representation in the media both of women and of ethnic minorities. Which is where the experiment came from. And we decided that the Oscars were a good thing to investigate because it’s an important award and it shows that a film has been appreciated by the academy and the general public.

If you want papers about the gender and ethnicity disparities look at this articles UCLA Hollywood diversity report (2018) which points out that there is a 3:1 white to minority in lead in films.

And Signorielli and Bacue (1999) which says that women receive less recognition than men, a lot are still portrayed stereotypically and they are younger and thinner and more attractive than men in the same position.

What we decided to do was look at all the films that won best picture at the Oscars and see if the main characters’ gender and ethnicity are equally represented through the years. And surprise, surprise, the answer was NO. There was one and I say ONE film with a non white protagonist in the old oscars, in total there were 7. So no improvement there. And no improvement in gender representation either, it stayed pretty much the same.

The only thing we found was that yes, there were more males and more whites. TA-fricking-DA!

This is important because films like The Help (x) with a female non white lead helped (sorry the pun) start conversation about gender, class and race
