Monday September 15 - Sunday September 21, 2014

Monday: chinese food for lunch, that we have not been to since june. went to restaurant for dinner, not much time to do anything afterward

Tuesday: had to get in an hour early for an international call but they didn't even show up so that was kind of a waste. anyway later there was a typesafe talk about reactive streams. got lunch from st mark's market but ate at my desk after getting some emails and having to fix some things. watched some wcs america

Wednesday: went to chipotle

Thursday: went to saigon shack. the people next to me were eating their pho the usual way but later they started putting the sauce in their spoons like I do, and I am not sure if it's because they saw me do it or if they usually do it

Friday: Everyone wanted to go to different places (I didn't want to go to dos toros since I had already gone to chipotle this week). Went to dorado, though the wait was unusually long. I guess there were a lot of people. Downloaded smash bros 3ds demo, played it a bit. at first I was kinda disappointed at the lack of stuff in the demo but actually it is still pretty good for those "I have a few minutes to waste, let me just play a round" moments. I have not turned my 3ds off since then

Saturday/Sunday: watched redbull battlegrounds dc (I wanted polt to win, but alas) and drew stuff

Monday, August 25 - Sunday August 31, 2014

Monday: went to indian food place (saw former managers + professor on the way there. I have no idea how to talk to people when seeing them on the street). anyway, food was good. but now I know never to go there alone because dang that is a lot of food for one person.

Tuesday: went to saigon shack for lunch. Realized that I could've gone to Go Go Curry on Monday for free topping coupons. Oh well. At home, worked on a simple lunch-tracking website so I can list locations and sort by last visit date. went through this blog and added about 8 months of data (december 2013 to now). It's nice going through and reading old things; it definitely felt like wintertime when I was done

Wednesday: Went to dos toros for lunch, got a burrito. it tasted better this time for some reason. maybe because I realized you can ask for lettuce (and then they add other vegetables as well). had a design meeting thing. didn't draw the last two days, so feels like today's drawings are kinda iffy

Thursday: went to st marks market for lunch. other coworkers decided to eat at their desk for whatever reason. anyway, the chicken cutlet sandwich was huge.

Friday: woke up late, yet somehow was only 10 minutes late for work. but it's a summer friday (and one before a 3-day weekend, even) so of course barely anyone was there. got lunch from dorado and ate in union square park. then got some ice cream (didn't know any ice cream places so I was about to go to a mcdonald's, but there was an ice cream truck right outside). then went home directly from there.

Saturday, Sunday: watched some sc2, drew stuff

Saigon Shack

Macdougal seems to be the street to be on if you're trying to find something good to eat, and this gem is definitely one of the best on the block. Not only do they serve up Vietnamese in a cozy space, but they serve some of the best Vietnamese I have had in NYC! The pho and spring rolls are great, but if you're a Banh Mih sucker like me, then make sure you taste some of that A+ goodness.

The Best Pho Place in NYC

If you really love Pho, and look for a place sells decent Pho, Saigon Shack is the one you would fall in love with.

The place is located at Greenwich Village near NYU. The place is really cozy like a bar. The place do not take reservation and credit card. So be sure bring cash to the restaurant before you go there.

The best part everyone likes is the soup base of the pho at Saigon Shack. You can order the signature Saigon Shack Pho if that’s the first time you go there. It contains all kinds of beef, including beef balls, tender, beef pieces. With all mint, lime, and bean sprouts come with the soup, you would fall in love with it.

1/22 - 1/27: x2 STRENGTH TRAINING SESSIONS + SQUEEZING AS MUCH OF NYC INTO ONE WEEKEND

visited John in NYC as he cranks out an oh-no-they-didn't Super Bowl project (CTRL + F for "sosolimited") for the next few days

...walked thru Central Park, the reservoir a big snowy button w/ five tiny holes formed by its fountain / drifted thru the chaos of the Met, poring over Rembrandts, Picasso's blue period, Turkish turquoise tiles--you could spend days, a lifetime in that museum

with the windchill, it felt colder than frigid so we sought out pho for lunch / had a huge, steaming, veggie-filled bowl for $8 at Saigon Shack (photo 4), just what the doctor ordered

and by night, we fled to Tokyo by way of Sakagura--hidden away and evocative of a Japanese courtyard / uni, snapper, fatty tuna, and skipjack sashimi (photo 2), + a prodigious, hand-worn booklet of +200 sakes, + one of the best meat dishes I've had: slices of raw wagyu beef arrived w/ a cube of beef fat and a hot stone straight from the oven; you lay a slice across the stone w/ your chopsticks, cooking it for 12 seconds on each side; lightly sprinkle w/ sea salt flakes, then close your eyes as fireworks explode inside your mouth

...and while John worked on Sunday afternoon, I found the heaven I had hoped I'd find--I knew it when I looked thru Gottino's window and saw a chalkboard w/ "Lambrusco," "Prosecco," "Rosé Spumante" / the lovely French girl behind the bar smiled as she poured me a glass, gently asked if I'd be ordering food and I could not resist the crostinis, like the fig, ricotta, shaved almond and honey (photo 1) / music lightly played / as more folks ordered coffee, the windows steamed / the snow came down, the bubbles flowed--if only it were possible to exist forever in an afternoon

so thank you, NY! you are wonderful and elsewhere and the answer to every form of hunger and want / even though it's been said before: i love you

Saigon Shack's peking duck banh mi. Good, but a hefty price for a Viet sandwich at $10. This place is good to stop by at late hours. (Mon-Wed 11am-11pm, Thu-Sat 11am-2am)
