I think it’s more like Klaus is the LEAST evil of them. The people trying to kill him call him a tyrant because he stopped them from feeding their peasants to their Mantis Monstrosity Machines or whatever. They do make a point of noting that the world was much much worse before he took over.
But we literally do not know that girls reason for assassination, that’s the whole point, Gil is just killing these people rather than even attempting to get their stories.(with the girl he may have had no choice to use lethal force in that split second BUT HE SURE DIDN’T SEEM SORRY ABOUT IT, with others, less likely) (also this is like, strategically bad too by the way, it’s good for him to get information, to know if any are being hired and who’s hiring him etc just to get a handle on who more of your massive amount of enemies are and how to oppose them. Even an assassin who seems clumsy might be backed by someone!)
He’s lists her possible reasons dismissively and says they don’t matter. And of his possible list of reasons, some of them sounded pretty horrifying like ‘poisoned the well’ and ‘turned village into owls’- there’s really no context that can “excuse” that. He may have been mocking them as exaggerations, but we’ve seen the troops do some pretty awful stuff already! Odds are that girl IS a peasant, too.
We’ve seen Klaus do horrible stuff on screen., “He’s not as a bad as our last tyrant” isn’t a good reason not get rid of a tyrant. “Oh but he helped big picture” isn’t going to make any of the innocents he slaughtered feel better, and it honestly shouldn’t. I’m not saying ruling isn’t complicated or execution without trial is the best solution, I just don’t believe in the worldview of “this asshole did a couple things right so he gets a pass for really serious crimes and the populace is wrong for hating him for those crimes”, and I think just because the “masses” were too scared to do something when the world was even worse doesn’t mean they don’t have a right to act now- I mean if we’re assuming this comic is realistic portrayal of humanity a lot of them probably did try to act against the chaos back then, but were suppressed or died. By the same virtue, a lot of them are doing the same now, and getting suppressed and killed. Not all of them may have noble methodology or have the ‘right’ reasons, but you can’t know that if you don’t even hear these reasons.
