A prompt: Tony meeting newborn/helping take care of the toddler twins of Giovannia

I REALLY MEANT TO HAVE THIS FINISHED EARLIER FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY BUT I GOT DISTRACTED I’M SORRY ANYWAY HERE IT IS LONGER THAN NECESSARY AND PROBABLY MAKING NO SENSE BUT I GOT CHOKED UP OKAY ANYWAY I’M SORRY

Tony’s mama startles him awake at 3:55am when she gently shakes him by the shoulder.

Bleary-eyed and barely able to process what’s going on, he murmurs, “Wha—?” he asks. “Mama?”

“It’s Gia,” Mama whispers. Her voice is shaky and excited and breathless. Tony is awake in an instant; he lurches up, and his blanket drops to his lap. “Ant, the twins are coming!”

Tony scrambles for his shoes and his jacket.

Before he gets to meet his niece and nephew, he spends three hours sitting in an uncomfortable waiting room chair. He unites and ties his shoes three times before Nonna smacks his hands and he sits back with a sigh.

Before he gets to meet his niece and nephew, he makes a coffee run for his family. Yes, he tells the gentleman behind the counter, I really need twelve cups of coffee. My whole family is here? My sister is having babies. Can I just get them all black? Where’s cream and sugar? I’m sorry it’s a lot but thank you for your help can you direct me back to the labor and delivery floor?

Before he gets to meet his niece and nephew, Tony gets teased by his family for grabbing Bianca’s pink hoodie instead of his Jersey Devils one. Mama reminds him that they’re gonna be taking pictures when he holds the baby and that he’ll forever be immortalized with his choice of wear. Tony happily tells them he doesn’t care.

Before he gets to meet his niece and nephew, Tony thinks of a million things he can’t wait to tell them about.

Gia has her babies at 8:42am and 8:54am. Ginny cries, and she and Mama are the first ones to go back. Tony waits patiently as each of his sisters filter through. He watched the little ones and hands them LEGO’s when they ask, and he wonders if the babies look like Gia and if they’ll grow up to be just like her.

Mama finally comes back and pats his shoulder, so he leaves the little ones to her and goes back to meet the newest members of his family.

The babies are small.

Tony knew they would be; Gia explained it over dinner months ago, her hand pressed against her belly and a soft smile on her face. Two of them means smaller babies.

Gia looks radiant and tired. She holds both of them in her arms and beams when Tony comes in. “Look who’s here, babies. It’s your Uncle Tony.”

Tony gets choked up before he can even say a word.

Gia smiles softly at him. “Ton, you wanna hold ‘em?”

“Is that even a question you have to ask?” he whispers.

The babies are small. He holds his nephew in his hand and he wonders what life was even like without these two tiny things in it. His nephew has got tons of hair and the Tangredi nose and mouth. Tony lets out a wet laugh and presses his thumb against the baby’s lip.

“He’s gonna look just like you,” Gia tells him happily. “Good thing, too. You’re gonna be his favorite uncle, you know? Keep an eye out on him.”

“What’s his name?” Tony asks. He’s afraid to speak too loudly.

“Cristian. Cristian Michele Tangredi.”

Tony can’t stop the tears from falling. This isn’t the first nephew or niece of his that he’s met or held in his arms, but each one always feels special. Tony loves his family—he loves seeing it grow. He loves holding these new lives in his hands and helping his sisters raise them and he loves seeing the Tangredi family legacy grow. Gia laughs but she’s crying too, and even still she reaches over so she can wipe a stray tear off of Tony’s cheek.

“You haven’t even met your niece yet,” she reminds him. “You can’t cry!”

Carmela Adelaide Tangredi is one ounce bigger than her brother, and twelve minutes older. Every member of the Tangredi family knows that she will never stop reminding Cristian of that. She has almost as much, if not more, hair that he does on top of her head; tufts of dark hair stick out from under her pink hat.

“She looks like Ma,” he says.

“That’s what I said, too,” Gia murmurs. “She’s beautiful, isn’t she?”

“Gia, they both are,” Tony says reverently. “Most beautiful babies I’ve ever seen. These are your babies, Gia! You have babies. The prettiest babies in the whole world.”

“Anthony Tangredi, if you start crying again, I’m gonna start crying again!”

Tony laughs, and it’s filled with snot and tears and joy. Gia helps him so he can hold both babies at once, and he sits there taking in their faces and falling in love with them over and over again. They close their eyes and they coo and sometimes they’ll peer curiously at him. Cristian makes it a habit to peek out of one eye then hurry and close it. Tony loves them, more than he thought he had room for in his heart.

He hopes he never has to stop experiencing this. His family is big, yes, and sometimes it’s more than he can handle. But it’s worth it. Meeting his nieces and nephews like this, knowing that he’s going to be in their lives for longer than they can comprehend—it’s all worth it.
