Non Profit Organization
The nonprofit I chose that is meaningful to me is Sail To Prevail out of Rhode Island. I have read a lot about celebrities doing many nonprofits, but I figured I would find something close to home that is more meaningful to me. On the website it states that this nonprofit was “Founded in 1982, Sail to Prevail was the first sailing program for individuals with disabilities in the United States.” This nonprofits mission is a national disabled sailing program where they assist children and adults from developmental issues to pediatric cancer, broad spectrum, autism, etc. Where they can experience the sea through therapeutic sailing. This program is in several states, Sail to Prevail teaches over 1,000 people every year with disabilities in 20-foot sailboats. Children and adults can steer, grind the winches, and trim the sails with an active instructor on board. This nonprofit provides advice for other sailing programs throughout the country.
The Sail to Prevail nonprofit hits home for me for many reasons. I have been living by the ocean for about 7 years now but growing up, I came here yearly with my mom for the ocean. She always used to tell me how therapeutic the ocean is and how much it helps her. Now fast forward to now living by the ocean and my mom with a neurological disability, I truly feel that this nonprofit hit home for me when I heard about it. Granted, not sure my mom would be into sailing, but she might enjoy the experience of being on the boat and learning about it. This nonprofit makes everyone feel welcome and able to enjoy the ocean and learn about sailing no matter their disability. I feel like this nonprofit is going to do tremendously well just by being in Newport, Rhode Island. They currently only use a website, Facebook and Instagram. I believe they will have more success and do more with Pinterest, twitter and an updated website. With all these social media platforms, they will all be links in which they lead to their main platform, their website. While they have a beautiful website, in my opinion they could do a lot more if I sat down and analyzed every page.
