Hubert Robert - Le Déjeuner de Madame Geoffrin (c.1775) The full title (written on a small plaque on the frame) reads: Mme GEOFFRIN se faisant faire la lecture par son domestique pendant son déjeuner - 'Madame Geoffrin having a text read to her by her servant during her lunch'.

Marie-Thérèse Geoffrin was one of the most famous salonnières in Paris in the mid-18th century; in a sense, her slaons became synonymous with the French Enlightenment era. She transformed the very notion of the salon, from a leisure institution of the high nobility into an avant-garde centre of intellectual and political life.

This is how her salon looked in 1755, when she was at the height of her influence: we see Voltaire reading from the first version of his tragedy L'Orphelin de la Chine (the painting is by Anicet Charles Gabriel Lemonnier - notice the huge mirror behind Madame Geoffrin):

Twenty years later, Madame Geoffrin is alone. She is still interested in the arts and can command a servant read a book to her - but now it is a servant who has put aside his brush, not a leading writer or philosopher of the age:

We are very likely seeing the same room in both paintings (and the same mirror):

Its colossal size can be explained by the fact that the husband of Madame Geoffrin (née Rodet) was Pierre François Geoffrin, a general cashier of the Manufacture royale de glaces de miroirs - the leading French mirror manufactory we now know as Saint-Gobain. They married in 1713, when Marie-Thérèse was only fourteen years old; her husband was about forty years older. She gave birth to their daughter two years later, and to their son two years after that.

Monsieur Geoffrin died in 1749, when Madame Geoffrin's salons were already famous. His death was hardly noticed by her visitors - and, judging by contemporary accounts, by Madame Geoffrin herself.

Monsieur Geoffrin would nonetheless remain present in all her salons, in the form of these French 'Venetian' mirrors, for the rest of her life.

PS: Looking into this mirror, we can see another mirror on the opposite wall - and within it, the reflection of this very mirror again. It may not be optically correct but it looks cool.

"Sou voluntária há já alguns anos, acredito que a diferença é dar um pouco mais de nós a diferentes projetos e causas.

Iniciei o voluntariado num projeto de apoio aos sem abrigos, o que me fez despertar perspetivas distintas na forma como vejo o mundo.

Mais, tarde abracei o projeto da “Terra dos Sonhos”, cujo propósito e missão é promover o bem-estar de crianças, jovens e adultos que se encontrem em situação vulnerável, principalmente causada por doenças crónicas e terminais. Projeto este que “passei” à minha filha logo que atingiu os 18 anos e se revelou enriquecedor e que faz dela um melhor ser humano.

A participação como voluntaria pela Saint-Gobain, junto do Just a Change, é para mim um motivo de orgulho e de pertença, pois considero que é fundamental toda esta envolvência com a comunidade, promovendo a solidariedade, a partilha, a união.

É, no fundo, contribuir para os valores humanos, para a criação do bem-estar nos outros, devolvendo sorrisos a quem mais precisa. Cada ação é única, em cada uma sei que contribuo para um Mundo melhor, sei que aprendo muito como ser humano, mas que também dou muito, sei que tenho orgulho em trabalhar na Saint-Gobain!"
