#Repost @colvinology Weller Barrel Aged No Cake, a 12% imperial stout from Transient Artisan Ales (@transientartisanales) and Saint Errant Brewing (@sainterrantbrewing) with Violet Sky cocoa nibs (@violetskychocolate), vanilla, cinnamon, and graham cracker, aged in Weller bourbon barrels for 4 months, and the Master Grade AMX-004DMD Qubeley Damned . Not to get ahead of myself, but from the nose alone I have a feeling this is going to be one of the best stouts of the year. I’m getting dark chocolate and milk chocolate, strong notes of cinnamon graham crackers, toasted caramel, maple syrup, and a big hit of vanilla that makes this smell like cake batter. The sip is intense and complex, offering up a base of dark chocolate syrup, along with flavors of cinnamon, graham crackers, vanilla extract, and bourbon. The maple is definitely still present, as well as some sweeter milk chocolate notes, but these mostly end up being supporting characters which add complexity, rather than stealing the show. In contrast to Monday’s beer, this drinks EXACTLY like a 12% chocolate cake stout. The bourbon is never overpowering, but it absolutely makes its presence known and there’s no way you’d think this had never touched a barrel. This tastes like the best bourbon brownie batter you’ve ever had, and it is absolutely one of the best stouts I’ve had this year. I’ve had several bangers from Transient, but I have to say I’ve got a lot less experience with the collaborating brewery Saint Errant…but look, if they make anything else that’s even half as good as this, they’re an amazing brewery, and you should definitely grab something from them if you see it.
