“Are you sure getting pregnant again was... the best decision? I only mean... didn’t the doctors say not to?”
we go crashing down
Bucky shrugged his jacket off his shoulders with a slight shiver, the warm air of lawyer’s office making for a stark contrast to the snow falling outside. He hung the tattered old jacket on the coat rack, making sure it was securely on before turning away. It had been his father’s old jacket, once upon a time; and it held more than sentimental value. Working on the docks in the summer was bad enough, but the winter was brutal, and Bucky was sure he’d fall into the icy water and die without that jacket. (Bucky was always known to be a bit overdramatic, though.)
Eager to leave the office as soon as possible --- since the only thing Bucky cared to know about lawyers was that they forced people from what shitty housing they had and shoved them to the streets --- Bucky moved towards the secretary’s desk, opening his mouth to ask where the girl named Amy was so he could walk her to wear she and Steve were “definitely not going on a date, Buck!” at the movies, for which Bucky was secretly paying.
But the secretary shocked Bucky. He’d expected an old lady to start barking at him simply for being young, or walking into her place of employment and daring to bother her --- but the girl behind the counter... Jesus, look at her! Now, Bucky was no stranger to beautiful dames; no sir. He got around, and he’d seen and acted upon plenty of these types of feelings before. But there was something in the girl’s eyes that made him stop in his tracks, that made him almost stutter, and he was flabbergasted. Luckily he was able to speak clearer than he could think, though he didn’t realize that his gaze was travel lining a little too generously over the secretary.
“Ma’am,” he greeted, smiling easily and giving her a small wink. “You think you might be able to help a guy like me out?”
“Wait, who fed Kennedy last?” Amy said, looking at the blank space on the dry-erase feeding planner that was hung next to the sleeping baby’s crib. “I think it was Steve,” she mused, writing down the time an looking back at Piper. “You want next turn?”
“It’s just... sometimes I wish... I wish I could’ve met her, y’know?” Amy said, after a few agonizing minutes of Piper trying to figure out why she was crying - or, more accurately, why she was trying not to. “That way I’d know. I’d know why I’m not good enough.”
