Saiyo looked at the chicken. It was tan, only a few shades off from the picture in the book, and read at the appropriate temperature. Kazuko couldn’t accuse her of trying to poison him this time. She might have skipped a couple of steps, but it wasn’t raw, and that was an improvement.
Something thumped against the door, but Saiyo ignored it. A local stray had been begging for food in the neighborhood, demanding alms for having the audacity to sleep where it wanted to be. When it happened again, Saiyo heard the groan from the other side that didn't sound feline at all.
Tossing the napkin that she'd been holding onto the table, Saiyo yanked open the door to protest, only to have Kazuko fill her arms. The man stumbled forward, his dark hair disheveled enough to tickle her nose.
"Start without me?" Saiyo teased until she felt how taut his muscles here beneath her hands. She pushed chakra into her legs to strengthen them, then helped Kazuko the few steps to the couch.
The man lowered himself on shaky arms, then dropped that last couple of inches. His left cheek had swollen to the point of closing that eye, and scrapes surrounded by yellowed skin littered the rest of his face.
Red filled Saiyo's gaze, but she managed to keep most of it out of her voice. "Who did this to you?"
Kazuko winced and leaned his head on the back of the couch. "Just some kids." He tried a chuckle, then thought better of it. "They thought I worked at the shop...sorry about the chocolate."
"The--" Saiyo paused, letting Kazuko's words sink in, then shoved to her feet with a curse. She was going to hunt those brats down, then show them how to finish the job."
"Don't" Kazuko croaked. He sucked in a pained breath and waved one hand when Saiyo turned. "They were just kids. I used that move you showed me."
Saiyo snorted. "Badly, by the looks of it." She teetered between making good on her threat and staying to care for the man who always saw the best in people. People like those punk kids; people like her.
Sighing, Saiyo turned into the kitchen to dig out the first aid kit that Kazuko kept better stocked than more shinobi she knew. She knelt on the floor and forced a grin that hopefully hid the truth of how terrible Kazuko looked. "Want to play doctor?"
