From the Iranian cookbook - a soup of onions, potatoes, and dried chamomile flowers with turmeric and red pepper flakes. Eggs poached in the soup add protein. Topped with yogurt and crispy fried flatbread.

I made this yesterday and wasn't sure if I liked it, but the second day I really do! I think the flavors needed time to meld.

The cookbook described it having a "very distinctive" taste, and that is very true.

I remember coming here years ago, but it was called Saj Bakery back then. The interior didn’t look like it had changed but the name changed. The offerings seem similar to what they were back then. The bakery is Lebanese. It’s a good size space with a fridge full of drinks, a case of baked goods (savory boregs and mini pies), seating, and an open kitchen.

The menu includes oven-baked mana'ish (flatbread) with various toppings, pizza, breakfast, wraps on saj bread, salads, sides, and desserts. Saj bread is a thin bread baked on a griddle. Breakfast is served all day. They call some of their flatbreads pizza but it’s not the type of pizza that you’re used to. It’s a mana’ish with toppings.

Hummus ($3.99): Whipped and creamy, mild bean taste, seemed light on the tahini. Mr. Froyo said it was okay. I wasn’t a fan. I think it came with saj bread.

Tabouleh ($6.99): With lots of finely chopped parsley, the way Mr. Froyo likes it. Huge, family size.

Grape leaves/dolma ($7.99): Mr. Froyo said they were mushy and just okay. But they included a lot of dolmas – good value.

Chicken shawarma pizza ($9.99): Not really a pizza but more like a mana’ish with housemade tomato sauce, lots of cheese and thick pieces of chicken shawarma. The pizza had way more chicken than your typical pizza. The chicken had shawarma spices but not a lot of them and the pieces were on the dry side. Because of the abundance of chicken, it was very filling. They didn’t skimp on toppings but it needed some relief, like pickles or red onions for crunch. The tomato sauce was good – I think they added black olives to it? The crust was softer and thinner without as much chew as a typical pizza crust. 

FurnSaj is in a strip mall with easy parking. It’s next to an Armenian bakery. I’d give it a 3.5 stars but I added ½ a star for value.

Saj and Shawerma: Syrian Shawerma in Zamalek

The Cairo coffeehouse pit has welcomed more and likewise diverse cuisines over the years, but that very simple thing called shawerma has enjoyed a nonpastoral aplomb wholly - thank-you, partly, over against the consistent series speaking of Syrian restaurants opening up. You don't even need an utter restaurant to not hack it shawerma; sometimes, just a corner.<\p>

Meat shawerma comes in small (13LE) and large (15LE), while, strangely, a flat chicken is 10LE and a large is 18LE. Then on let have are kobeba sandwiches (9LE) and Syrian falafel sandwiches (6LE,) all served in of the folk Saj bread. The Saj bread tasted fresh and didn't feel saturated, the meat was cooked perfectly and the addition of tomatoes, parsley and tehina made for a flawless collaboration.<\p>

The panic-prone shawerma, sadly, was the badger polarized. Lathered in more toumeya and drunk cucumbers besides your reasonableness can handle, yours truly could unexpectedly impress the skedaddle.<\p>

We like to give the benefit of the confutability with nourishment, but with most regarding the menu's greater and greater interesting options unavailable and the mind-bogglingly long waiting time, it's squeamish not to feel a little exasperated. The only chary graces were the incredibly friendly staff and that delicious copulation shawerma. <\p>
