Inside Sajaegi, K-Pop's Open Secret

In the digital era, accusations of surreptitious chart manipulation are common throughout the world — in South Korea, it's called sajaegi.

Last fall, Malvo, an indie K-pop artist, was walking to the parking lot after a long day. He had just finished a show at a university festival near Seoul, South Korea. In the lot, a middle-aged man approached the musician, saying he had a "marketing opportunity" for Malvo and his songs. He didn't give his phone number, or his name.

Two days later, as instructed, Malvo met the man and his colleague at a cafe in Seoul. The men, whose names Malvo still doesn't know, looked "ordinary to the extreme," knit sweaters and all. "They told me they could get me 'into the charts,' " Malvo, whose real name is Lee Beomju, tells NPR. "I realized this wasn't a regular marketing offer. This was music sajaegi."

BTS Sajaegi (chart manipulation)

During BTS’s Golden Disc acceptance speech, RM thanked Army and also brought up moments from their debut time. Not only did he do that, but he also brought up the problems with chart manipulation (also known as Sajaegi). Here’s what he said:

“There is one thing that I want to talk about too. We (BTS) are blessed with luck, and thanks to many people, we are able to say what we want to. However, there are also many artists who can’t do the same, and are making music sincerely in places that we can’t see. I hope that in 2020, their efforts and sincerity will not be in vain, and that they can reach out to the public fairly. I hope that things that have been done wrong in the 2010′s can end with the 2010′s ending.” 

The definition of ‘Sajaegi’ is when a company buys bulk supplies of their own albums or rents around 20 PC rooms and has the staff or owner replay the music over and over again. It puts the artist in a higher position on the charts. Although, it does this unfairly and cheats it’s way up there.

Glad you like them!, and since you asked for it, here are another underrated kpop kweens:

This time we’ll get to know Laboum whom have been around since 2014 and slept on since their debut HOWEVER koreans and the world need to wake up and give these girls some love since THEY DID THAT and released the kbop of the summer 2k17.

Hwi Hwi (most commonly and mistakenly known as Miss This Kiss -which is actually the name of the mini-album featuring this song- ) is Laboum’s latest release and it has instantly become their most successful release to date outselling all six of their previous mini-albums in just one day.

This sudden success has caught everyone by surprise (their company and the girls themselves) especially when they had to turn to crowdfunding to fund this release (link for their makestar campaign here).

Laboum were really struggling (this is actually their second time having to use crowdfunding to make a comeback) so it’s really awesome that they’re getting more recognition and revenue (this means more releases in the future).

They even got their first win ever since they debuted.

It really warms my heart and makes me really happy when I see underrated girlbands finally seeing their hard work and efforts pay off. Seriously, these girls work their asses off (not only Laboum but basically every girl in every girlband especially if they’re not that well-known) and this hard work is not always appreciated or rewarded so it makes me really happy that they’re finally getting some recognition. Kudos to you kweens! 💖.

However not everything about this sudden success is ~all happiness~ since they’ve been accused of sajaegi (sajaegi is when companies buy albums to boost sales). Also, their first win has also been criticized for being fixed (they beat IU, a solo singer who is far more famous and established).

Fortunately the music show released a statement confirming that their win is legit and valid and also their company has shut down the rumours of sajaegi so everything’s is fine and valid for our new underrated kweens.

คำตอบนั้นก็คือ“ไลฟ์สด”ดีๆ การตลาด เทคโนโลยี กลโกง การมิกซ์เสียง การเสริมแต่ง คอมเมนต์ของพวกเฮตเตอร์ ทั้งหมดล้วนแล้วแต่ชวนให้หดหู่ แต่การเตรียมตัวเพื่อไลฟ์สดที่ยอดเยี่ยมและร่วมหายใจไปกับบรรดาผู้ชมบนเวที ก็จะแก้ปัญหาพวกนั้นไปได้เยอะเลยไม่ใช่หรอครับ ถึงศิลปินและโปรดิวเซอร์ทุกท่านในวงการนี้ ผมว่าพวกเราสามารถคลี่คลายความกังวลใจของพวกเราได้หลายส่วนเลยถ้าพวกเราออกจากกิจกรรมเพื่อจะอยู่รอดในธุรกิจรายการโชว์ที่ไม่จำเป็นทั้งหลาย และมาโฟกัสกับเวทีดีๆ ในท้ายที่สุดแล้ว Kpopที่เติบโตเป็นอย่างมากก็เริ่มต้นมาจากการแสดงบนเวทีและคอนเทนต์ต่างๆที่มีการแข่งขันกันเพื่อประสบความสำเร็จ
