Today’s prompt is poem. I chose the first part of a long poem written by Carl Orff called Carmina Burana. I’ll never forget the first time I heard this piece of music. I was in college at #iubloomington and the music department teamed up with vocals and the ballet department. This piece had a ballet choreographed to it with the chorus standing on stage singing with live music. WOW! It blew me away! The music, the dancing, the singing, all of it. Since college, I’ve seen this performed sans a ballet company. It’s still beautiful, but nothing will ever bring back that night when I saw this piece performed at IU. English translation (poem is is written in Medieval Latin and German): O Fortune, like the moon2 you are changeable, always waxing or waning; hateful life first oppresses and then soothes as fancy takes it; poverty and power it melts them like ice. A bit about the poem: “Carmina Burana was the title of a collection of medieval Latin and German lyrics published in 1847, taken from a 13th century manuscript then in the possession of a Benedictine abbey near Munich.” Source: https://www.npr.org/2011/07/18/103529038/carmina-burana-music-of-monks-and-drunks (link for full article).
