I've been thinking about this for a while: IF Stiles were to confide in anyone about what happened with Donovan it definitely wouldn't be Scott or the Sheriff and most likely not Kira or Liam so that would leave Malia (logical enough she's his gf and she may not be as judgemental but she probably wouldn't get the emotional impact) or Lydia (most likely her I think - I think they're close enough) but this got me wondering... (1/2)
(2/2) If Derek was there would he tell him? As shippers we would hope so and Derek, with his experience probably would be the most understanding person to go to BUT do you think Stiles would actually go to him, shipping goggles off, are they close enough?
Honestly, I think Stiles is a lot like Derek on this matter and unless prodded and backed up into a corner I don’t think he’d willingly admit to this, or seek out anyone to discuss it with. I know we keep talking about Scott and the sheriff as the two people who would reject him, and I think that is true. Those are the two who would react badly to the information - Scott for sure because of his black and white morality, and I have this nasty feeling that if Stiles admits to this his dad will not believe him. He’d believe him being responsible, but might question if Stiles was culpable or not. We know he isn’t, but without a crime scene and the body as proof, and also with Stiles hiding the fact, it would read as suspicious and of someone trying to hide an intentional crime. To quote the man himself “I haven’t believed a single word that came out of Stiles’ mouth since the day he learned to speak.”
Some of the others might follow Scott, like Kira (more or less a doormat, sadly). Lydia and Malia I can see as being pissed at not being trusted with this from the start, but not necessarily turn on him. But we need to factor in Stiles’ frame of mind, and he’s terrified of losing people. To the point where he molds himself to others, becoming what they need, so they won’t reject him and leave him behind. He’s got terribly low self-esteem, is depressed as all hell and views himself as a monster for being glad he stopped Donovan, and guilty about the death and that he felt relief in the moment.
Derek also looked at himself like a monster for things he wasn’t culpable for. He too was punishing himself for it. He was constantly throwing himself into high risk situations without a plan, using himself as a weapon and a shield for others. Almost as if he had a death wish or at least didn’t think he deserved better.
I think Stiles would have found understanding if he’d turned to Derek. But I’m not sure he would’ve done that of his own free will, not unless confronted directly. Just like Derek never confided in anyone either. But Derek evolved. We saw that throughout the seasons, and with the sequence in the 3b finale, even if it wasn’t “real” it was real to Derek - we know that Derek trusted Stiles, was ready to ask his advice, to appear vulnerable and to seek him out.
But Stiles doesn’t necessarily know this. Derek is much further along in his understanding of their relationship, and I’m not talking about shipping now, I just mean in the terms of their growing friendship and trust. It also seemed to me that Derek “sees” Stiles, much more so than any of his friends or his dad. And he probably would’ve noticed that something was up, perhaps even recognized the signs and confronted him.
I think Stiles would’ve learned, just like Derek did, to open up, but I don’t think he’d do it without a little prodding. But I don’t think it would’ve take much, and with a little nudge Stiles would crack and spill his little heart out and there’d be cuddling and hugs, and eventually it would all turn NC-17. Sorry the goggles came on again there. It happens.
