OCT. ‘25 PROMPTS — 6. Dante Torres
A/N: Happy Halloween! This one was one of the ones that I was most excited to write about and what I’m going to end on. Sorry to that last spooky idea I had, maybe next year? — I say every year lol. Anyway! This season has been pretty good so far to me (better than the other two shows imo) and I’ve been enjoying myself. Plus I love Dante’s change in appearance this season sorry not sorry! It’s my job to send a healthy love Dante’s way since the writers don’t want to lol. Here goes nothing!
PROMPTS ARE FROM HERE + HERE & I’m using: 22. a blood soaked sidewalk with a trail leading down an alley + ✧ "can we go to the fair downtown please??" "you just want the candy apples." "PLEASE."
WARNINGS: this is a spooky fic so ofc I’m gonna make it Chicago pd style although the tags are already a ghost town 👀, decided to throw another character in here from Chicago fire because I like Brandon larracuente although his character is a piece of work—which comes into play here, written in 3rd POV, crime scenes, & fluff.

The dealership lights slowly fade out one by one, which is enough for Dante to be aware that she’s on her way out. She ended up staying later at work than Dante today, due to her supervisor heading home early (food poisoning from some extravagant dinner party he went to last night that she declined going to, yuck!). Leaving Dante to wait around—which he didn’t mind—busying himself with a few extra files until it was time to pick her up.
It was routine.
She worked up the street and around the corner from the station at a car dealership so it only made sense for Dante to at least bring her home when the streetlights came on. Normally his times started much earlier than hers, plus he liked to get a little workout routine in first — mainly because he wasn’t sleeping but that’s another conversation — then head into work.
Her hours consisted of a usual 9-5 as a receptionist, yes she was actually into classic cars instead of upscale modern luxury ones that the dealership sold, it wasn’t something she was passionate about as a career but hey, a job’s a job!
Dante watched from outside of his car, the cool autumn wind started to pick up as she locked the building before shoving her work keys into her tote bag. When her head lifted, spotting Dante’s car, the only one left in the parking lot, there seemed to be a bit more pep in her step opposed to the slight slouch of her shoulders.
She nearly skipped over to him and Dante fought the twitch by the corner of his mouth. Her hands immediately clasped onto his as she smiled up at him while he stared back at her almost blankly.
“What is it?” He says after a slow exhale.
She doesn’t even bother to play it off that she wanted something, “Can we go to the fair downtown please?”
That same fair she’s been talking about for over a week now. It’s basically a mini festival that comes through in October downtown with vendors selling their own art work, clothing, fall coded treats, knit-knacks, you name it. The proceeds normally went to less fortunate families who can’t afford costumes if they celebrate Halloween or went towards their groceries.
Dante vaguely remembered that either today or tomorrow would be its last day and every time he planned to go, a case got too hot so he focused remained on that or he was too tired after work to do anything but shower and attempt to sleep.
He didn’t miss the disappointment on her face or in her tone after the second time and definitely felt bad when he kept promising he would. She even considered going alone with her cavapoo tagging along or taking another friend instead.
Yet…she still waited around.
“You just want the candy apples,” Dante finally answers after a while of staring at her pretty face, a smile appearing on his.
Her hands only squeezed his tighter as she threw her head back, letting out a scream so good she should be a final girl, “PLEASE!”
Dante’s eyes go wide as she pulls her gaze back to his and he lightly shakes his head at her, before peeking around to see if anyone thought she was being murdered. “Fine! Just don’t do that again. I don’t need you taking my ear drums out.”
“Yay!” She throw her arms up over his shoulders.
Dante carefully wraps his arms around her waist, noise briefly pressing into the jacket that kept her shoulders warm. He could have stayed like this a little longer but she pulls back.
“Let’s go! It started at five and I’ve got to go home and freshen up. We can just walk down from my apartment since I’m closer anyway.”
Which was true and one thing about Dante?
If the parking was trash or if he had to pay for parking? He wasn’t going. Parking on her street was worse compared to his place with his ma so he didn’t mind leaving his car at home. Although he kept that to himself just in case she jinxed it and took forever getting ready.
She normally did.

Her cavapoo, Nutmeg, had the right idea wanting to stay inside tonight and wouldn’t let her put his fall-festive sweater on for the event. Dante found it humorous after the fifth try, scooping up the dog himself while she pouted, telling Nutmeg he doesn’t have to be bullied by her like she’s bullying him to be social tonight.
Dante got a nice flick of the ear for that.
Once back out into the breezy night, the two fell into easy chatter (with her being the more animated one) as they walked the city of Chicago side by side. The friends eventually saw the festive balloons and chalkboards at the entrance of the street where the fair was taking place.
A effortless smile appeared on her face as she continued up some more until…she spotted one figure sitting against the outside post, fingers scrolling their phone.
His dark eyes seemed to snap up a second after she stopped in her tracks.
Like he can sense her hesitation.
“Hey,” He calls out first, a hint of softness to his tone, realizing it’s her, before clearing his throat.
Dante picks up on her giving a forceful exhale. Her fingers clasp together in front of her, fidgeting before dropping them but still letting her thumb play with the gemstone ring on her pointer finger.
She acknowledges him, “…Hey, Sal.”
His dark blue eyes shift to Dante’s green hues as he pushes off the post, stepping closer to the two.
“And you are?”
Dante keeps his hands in his pockets, shoulders lightly lifting, “I’m Dante, man.”
Sal hums, folding his arms as he repeats, “Dante, huh?” Before moving his eyes back to her, “You two on a date, Dante?”
Dante’s eyebrows raise and before they can even glance over at her, she’s shoving Sal back before yanking the top of his hoodie, managing to pull him away from Dante.
Dante blinks, watching as she tears into Sal, who has his head tilted back, arms still crossed as she basically yelled at him on the sidewalk. Sal’s head even turns slightly towards Dante, peering over at him from underneath his lashes.
His stance almost appeared smug that he got her riled up like this and Dante quickly connected that “Sal” was most likely the ex she vaguely talked about.
She even yanked Sal’s chin, turning his attention back to her as she continued telling him about himself. Dante even stepped forward after seeing Sal nearly tower over her, stepping into her space to say something quietly to her.
Something stops Dante from intervening, the wind sends the fallen crunchy leaves over his sneakers from his right. His gut tells him to glance towards the alleyway and he does. His eyes go into slits, neck craining a little as he spots something up ahead on the gravel.
He steps towards the alleyway, spotting a trace of droplets at the sidewalk before it faded into gravel that trails into the alleyway. Dante pulls his phone out, turning on his flashlight to see a pool of blood, sending alarms off in his head.
Her voice picks up from behind, his ear facing towards her but his gaze remains on the alleyway. With one hand on his waist, Dante slowly steps forward, eyes scanning almost every inch of the alley, following the pool of blood that leads to the dumpster.
He sees what appears to be…a carved up, battered, and bloody hand hanging outside of the dumpster. There’s still blood dripping off what’s left of the fingertips. Dante exhales through his nostrils, pausing as his fingers touch the lid of the dumpster. He lifts it, immediately finding the body slumped inside.
Dante’s eyes and hands quickly confirms what he’s discovered.
This man was dead.
He carefully closes it back, looking further down the alleyway, drawing his gun after checking up towards the top of the buildings before jogging out towards the end, searching left then right. It’s quiet besides the soft music of the fair playing on the opposite street.
Dante calls it in.

Within minutes…Intelligence rolls up.
Kim, Adam, Kevin, and Imani step out while the other cops on scene blocked the entrances towards the alleyway off already. The fair’s music continues to hum but there’s definitely a crowd who planned to exit from this way, curious to what’s going on as the flashing lights contrast against autumn’s sky.
Forensics already took their place in the alleyway, as Eva lifts the yellow tape herself, stepping under it before moving to join the group.
“Is he a possible suspect?” Kim quizzes Dante with a lift of her chin, large doe eyes set on Sal, who’s still standing beside Dante’s friend but his eyes only burn into the back of Dante’s frame.
Dante glances over his shoulder at Sal, catching his eye, but Sal doesn’t turn his head.
Kevin slowly nods, agreeing with Kim’s thought process as he notices the way the guy is staring at his team member, “Yeah, what do you know about him?”
Imani even tosses in, “Seems like he’s trying to figure you out, Torres. Also seems like he’s not much of a fan.”
Dante shrugs, turning back to the team, “Just met him. He’s her ex. He didn’t like that I questioned him right away, if he saw anything. I can still press him.”
Adam smirks as he looks up from his notepad, “You sure? Don’t want him throwin’ hands at you ’cause he’s in his feelings over what you say is nothing between you and her.”
Dante’s scoff is soft but sharp, “I got it, Ruzek. I can handle myself, no problem.”
Imani’s eyes glance at Kim, trying to pick up on what the tension between the two is about but she lightly shakes her head at the newbie.
Kevin bumps Adam’s arm. “You heard the man.”
Adam throws up a hand. “Alright. Voight’s five minutes out. Let’s keep it moving.”
Dante turns without another word, eyes lingering on Sal as the team spreads out to start their own investigations.
He steps in front of Sal and her, whose eyes barely left Dante’s. Before Dante can even say anything Sal takes charge.
“Am I free to go officer or are you going to keep harassing me?”
Your elbow goes right to Sal’s side, making him grunt, glare turning towards you before flicking back to Dante’s.
Dante answers, “I’m just doing my job.”
“Course you are,” Sal replies, “And maybe you’re doing it wrong.”
“Excuse me?”
Sal shrugs his shoulders, making Dante step closer to him.
“If you know something, it would be smart of you to tell me what you know now.”
Sal speaks, “I already told you that I didn’t see anything. I came in from the other end and stood out here texting my friend. You want to see my texts?”
“Yeah, actually I do.” Dante’s impulsive reply was instant, his gaze tightening.
Sal snickers, glancing over at her, “You’ve got a real winner here.”
“You don’t get to say anything to me,” she bites, “You cheated on me, remember? Stop trying to ruin my night and just cooperate.”
Sal stares hard at her, his eyes silently saying what she knows his mouth can, she holds his stare while Sal slaps his phone in Dante’s hand.
“Thank you.” Dante goes through his recent messages, “I’ll be back.” Before heading over to where Kevin stands at his navy dodge charger on his laptop.
Dante connects the phone to Kevin’s computer, eyes still watching as she puts further distance between her and Sal when he tries to reach out to her.
“Everything good?” Kevin asks, as he keeps his eyes trained on the laptop screen.
Dante dips his head, “It better be.”
And that’s all he needs to say.

After clearing the scene, Dante makes sure of it to walk her back home to her apartment. Crime scenes weren’t her thing, she didn’t even like watching crime shows or documentaries that her best friend raved to Dante about on multiple occasions. When she first spotted the blood when Dante came back out of the alley, steering her and Sal from the scene, she nearly fainted.
She stuck around, even when Sal tried to get her to leave the scene, clearly shook over a dead body but she told him, leaving with him would be her last option. She boldly voiced that and Dante noticed how her whole demeanor changed around Salvador Vasquez.
Rightfully so.
“Looks like I owe you a candy apple since that fair turned into a completely different show. I’m sorry about that, by the way.” Dante lightly joked, running a hand over his grown out hair as he stood at her doorway.
She lightly shakes head knowing what happened isn’t his fault, “It’s like that everyday for you, huh?”
“Just about.” Dante offers a small smile, “…I’ll make it up to you, okay?”
“Okay.” She sends a small smile back, “You’ll let me know when you get home?”
Dante nods his head, “Always. If you can’t sleep tonight you can call me, alright?”
“Yeah.”
He dips his head, catching her eye, letting her know that he means that.
Her arms go around his waist, head resting against his chest, it was a quick squeeze with a soft sigh. “Be safe going home, Dante.”
“I will.”
She sends him a look, before he taps his fingertips against his chest. Showing that he means it.
The next morning feels like a restart, her beaming smile was the first thing that greets Dante as she climbs into the car. The morning is a little warmer than yesterday so it felt like Dante’s heat was actually working this time.
He plops a brown polka doted decorated bag into her lap after she buckles herself in.
“Whats this?”
Dante drums his fingers against the steering wheel as the radio hosts lowly chat amongst each other. “It’s a good morning present.”
“Oh, you know I love gifts.” She lightly rips the small circle sticker from the brown bag, fully opening it before pressing her nose towards the baked goods, “…Smells like apple.”
Dante nods, “Better than your candy apple. It’s that Apple fritter bread, warmed up, it’s the one you wished you tried instead of that pumpkin muffin you hated from the new bakery we went to earlier this month. Told me they were actually at the fair last night too.”
The thoughtfulness definitely touched her heart and Dante can tell she appreciated it.
Especially with her hand back in his.
Seeing a small bit of joy in her did something to Dante Torres.
Then, before she can even tease him about going to bakeries without her, he leans over and kisses her. Just like that. Quick, impulsive, soft.
She blinks, eyes wide as Dante settles back, his fingertips pinching at the tingle that appeared on his bottom lip, realizing that he just did that.
“…You know I’ve been waiting a whole year for that.” Is what she says to him, making Dante whip his head back to her, brows raised.
Dante breathes out, “Huh?”
“Huh?” She teases into his face, earning a real laugh from him.
She peeks over at him as she chews on the bread, watching as his skin tints a cute shade of pink.
“A year?” He questions, hand resting on the top of the steering wheel as if that’ll help him stay upright.
She hums in satisfaction at the baked goods and nods over at him, “Yeah…we’ve got a lot of making up to do.”
Dante blows out a breath, picking up on his heart racing at the idea. He wasn’t sure if he’d ever be fully healed from a past love but he was willing to see what happens next with her.
“Maybe we do,” he murmurs, stare burning against hers before he starts up the car, “…Can I get a piece?”
She doesn’t hesitate to break off the bread, holding the piece out to him. Dante slowly turns his head towards her, leaning forward to take the bread between his teeth. His lips pecking at her fingertips before he checks over his shoulder, pulling away from the curb.
And for once, there’s no noise, no crime scene, no interruption, just sunlight spilling through the windshield and the faint taste of sugar still lingering between them.
