What brands of powders do you use for your chocolates?
A simple question with a lot of answers. I’m gonna give you the long version ‘cause it’s more fun.
First off we have Wilton’s brand! Wilton’s is easy to find at any craft store, you can get a wide variety of colours easily, and it’s about half the price of other luster dust. It’s also really bad. Refuses to stick to the inside of the mold, and the colours aren’t very strong. You can mix it with cocoa butter to change the colour a bit, if you don’t have proper coloured cocoa butter. Otherwise don’t use it. I got mine before I knew any better.
Next is Lor Ann Oils. This stuff is even cheaper than Wilton’s, at 4$ a container. This isn’t really luster dust tho. It’s powdered food colouring. A little bit will turn dark chocolate a much darker shade. The rack at the store I go to I always nearly empty, so I’ve only found these two colours. It’s either very popular, in limited supply, or they can’t be bothered to order more.
I’ve only got the one vial of sugarflair, but it’s a good one. It’s a galaxy purple that has purple, red, and blue in it, makes for some really cool effects. They have a 40+ colour variety pack you can get, if you have the funds. Can’t personally attest to the quality but this one’s pretty good.
Just started getting Roxy and Rich recently after seeing them at a local store. The colour tends to be a bit thin when dusted on, but it’s got a more powerful glitter effect going on. Solid choice.
And finally we have the good shit. Any time I’ve made anything and you’ve thought “wow, that colour looks good” it been Merck powder. It sticks to the mold really well, it mixes with anything you want, the colour always looks great no matter how little you use, it just shines really well. I would kill for this stuff. I doubt I’d be able ink the chocolate dice at all without this stuff.
Of course, there is a catch. Actually getting the stuff. You can order Merck’s stuff online through it’s Candurin brand, and you’ll be able to find gold, silver, different gold, 5 other silvers, white, gold again, silver again, bronze, and pinkish gold. The only way I’ve found to get actual colours is to go through Wish, which is a headache in and of itself.
If you want to try this stuff you’re looking for a listing like this. First time I ordered it they left out a container, second time they sent each container separately over the course of a couple weeks. Sometimes they sell out and you have to wait an unknown amount of time for a new listing to show up. And even with all these negative experiences, it’s still totally 100% worth it. Plus they last a really long time, it only takes the lightest of dustings to get a great look, so it’s worth the wait. If you want to try this one bit don’t want to buy a bunch all at once the bronze, purple, and pink are probably the best. The bronze especially.
There’s a lot of other brands out there, but they tend to be 30$ a container once you factor in shipping, and I’m only willing to pay that for the Merck stuff (it was cheaper the first time it was listed but I’m hooked now).
