I hope this isn't weird, but what do you do for work? I'm just curious

haha it’s not a weird question! I work in television and film as a 1st assistant art director. It’s a title that unless you work in the business it means nothing to most people so I”m going to explain it with pictures. Every time you see a sign, a label, a newspaper, or an animation on a screen someone has to design that. And that’s my job.

I design shit for tv. if I do my job right, you will never notice. It will just blend in and disappear – unless it’s a hero piece and then my job is to make it stand out. lol But that’s part of my job, knowing when things should stand out and when things need to just become background noise.I should also mention there’s two kinds of 1st asst. Art Directors. There’s a graphics person, ( like myself ) and usually there’s a set designer who makes construction drawings for sets, and often each of us will have our own assistant ( a second assistant art director or a trainee). It’s a super fun job, but also very very very stressful. You work 12 hours a day, five days a week, and you are always glued to your phone. The crew you work with becomes your family, your friends and pretty much your whole life lol. Thankfully most shooting schedules are only 2-4 months and then you get time off until the next show – and how much time off you take depends on your finances and your own mental health. It usually takes me a month to recover from a show, before I’m ready to start a new one. lol
